| Bryan_Carey's Full Review: Samuel Adams Boston Lager |
Boston Lager is the flagship brand in the Samuel Adams family of beers. It is a bottom- fermented lager, similar to other mass- produced beers like Budweiser and Miller. Any other similarities between Sam Adams Boston Lager and American style lager should stop right there. This beer is far more complex than your typical American Beer.
Sam Adams has a darker golden/brown color than most other lagers. If you pour the beer quickly into a glass, you will notice that it produces a good size head of foam that lasts longer than other beers, due to the fact that it is brewed using only the basic ingredients: malt, hops, yeast, and water, with no preservatives (German Ourity Law Standards). The aroma is hoppy, flowery, and spicy. The taste is hoppy and, to a lesser extent, malty. Boston lager tastes sweet at first, then finishes dry. And it leaves a dry aftertaste in the mouth, balanced equally between hops and malt. The alcohol level of Boston Lager is 4.75 percent by volume and a 12 oz. serving contains 160 calories.
This beer's hoppy/malty characteristics make it an excellent beer to drink with many foods, particularly steak, beef stew, hamburger, or sausage. The taste of German hops are this beer's strongest asset. Caramel, spice, biscuits, and toasted malt flavors all contribute to the flavor and make this a beer to remember but the hops are what I remember more than anything when I sample this brew.
Samuel Adams Boston Lager is a very good beer. It may not be the "Best Beer in America", like it often claims, but it is very good nonetheless and it easily beats the other macro- brewed lagers.
