| Bryan_Carey's Full Review: Samuel Adams Golden Pilsner |
The Boston Beer Company is the most successful of all microbreweries in the United States. They have a large product line which includes approx. 17 different styles. I have tried almost all of the beers in the Boston Beer Co. family. But, for some reason, it took me a while to finally try Samuel Adams Golden Pilsner. I think my reluctance was due to the fact that this is a pilsner style, and pilsners are usually ordinary and boring. I was in for quite a surprise when I tasted this beer!
Samuel Adams Golden Pilsner tastes like a true pilsner should taste. Pilsner is a style that originated in Czechoslovakia. Most beers on the market today that claim to be pilsners are really not. They only use the pilsner classification because there is no other category to place them in.
The flavor of Samuel Adams Golden Pilsner could be described as clean, crisp, and dry; but not too dry. Its fresh flavor comes from the use of classic ingredients: two- row barley and caramel malt; Saaz, Salter, Hallertauer, and Northern Brewer hops; and bottom- fermenting lager yeast. The beer is light golden in color with an aroma that is similar to other pilsners, except for the additional emphasis on the hops. This pilsner has an alcohol level of 4.6 percent by volume and there are 145 calories in a 12 oz. glass, both of which place it in the average range for this style.
With its balanced taste of hops and malt, Samuel Adams Golden Pilsner is the perfect complement to pizza. In fact, pizza was the first food that came to mind when I tasted this beer. There are plenty of other foods to match it with, like chicken, pasta, and salads. It's a very versatile beer that will go well with many foods or events.
Boston Beer Co. introduced its Golden Pilsner in 1996, making it the first beer of this style in the Samuel Adams family. The brewers at the Boston Beer Co. should be congratulated for making a pilsner that really is worthy of its name. They could have easily made a beer similar to other mass- produced American products and just slapped the pilsner name on the label.
This is a good beer to give to friends who are still having trouble breaking the "bad beer" habit. If you have such a friend, offer him/her a Samuel Adams Golden Pilsner the next time he/she asks for a Budweiser. And watch closely as a look of pleasant surprise covers your friend's face. This is a very good pilsner beer.
