| Bryan_Carey's Full Review: Samuel Adams Summer Ale |
Samuel Adams Summer Ale is a very good summertime beer, made to be refreshing and light, yet still flavorful and interesting. This beer was first brewed in 1996 and it is still brewed only as a seasonal offering. You can only buy this beer for about 5 months per year.
Samuel Adams brews this beer in a similar fashion to a Belgian White Ale, but somewhat different. Belgian White Ale is characterized by its use of coriander and orange peel. This beer does not contain either of these ingredients, but it does have a citrus taste and it does use its own special spice: Grains of Paradise, a.k.a. Malaguita Pepper. In addition to these special ingredients, Samuel Adams Summer Ale uses 2- row barley and wheat malt and Hallertau and HHA hops.
This beer could be described as light, but flavorful. It does have a citrus taste and a spiciness to the finish, but neither of these flavors is overbearing in any way. The aroma is distinctly wheat, with a little spice, and the color is golden, but cloudy. The foaming action is pretty good at first, and it takes a while to settle down. But once it does settle down, the carbonation level seems a bit low. There is a pleasant aftertaste of citrus. The alcohol level is 5.2 percent by volume and there are 150 calories in a 12 oz. serving.
This beer is a summer wheat ale, so it is best to drink on a hot, summer day when you're looking for some refreshment. It would also go well with a salad, fruity dessert, or with appetizers.
Samuel Adams Summer Ale is a good beer and is very distinct and tasty. I don't know of any other beer that uses an ingredient like grains of paradise. This makes it a very distinct beer, when compared to other summer beers, which are usually just wheat malt with different fruits added. Leave it to the Boston Beer Company to come up with an original recipe like this! I recommend this beer to all lovers of more unusual beer.
