Pros: Gives You a Warm, fuzzy Feeling

The Bottom Line: This is a decent Samuel Adams product but not one of my favorites in the S.A. family.

| Bryan_Carey's Full Review: Samuel Adams Winter Lager |
In celebration of the winter season, Boston Beer Company offers Samuel Adams Winter Lager. This seasonal beer is brewed with generous portions of wheat malt along with spices to produce a hearty beer.
Winter Lager is reddish- brown in color and the aroma is indicative of malt, ginger, and other spices. The initial sip of this beer will cover your palate with the flavor of herbs, spices, wheat, and a touch of yeast. As it goes down, you will notice that it has a bitter, dry, alcoholic finish. Like all Samuel Adams products, this beer is brewed with choice hops (Goldings hops, in this case) but the hop flavor is barely perceptible. The hops cannot stand up to the full- bodied flavor of the spices and malt. Alcohol content and calories are both high in this beer. It contains 6.9 percent alcohol by volume and 190 calories per 12 oz. serving.
As far as pairing with food, Winter Lager would be a tough one to call. It would have to be matched up with an equally assertive- tasting, spicy food, like a very rich dessert. But I think that this is the type of beer that is really best if it is drank by itself.
Samuel Adams Winter Lager is a richly flavored beer. It is a respectable effort, on the part of the Boston Beer Company, to revive the winter style of beer. Samuel Adams changes this product from time to time, so it could taste very different in future years. For this particualr year, it is pretty average overall but Sam Adams should still be commended for its effort.
