| andaryl's Full Review: Samuel Smith's Old Brewery Nut Brown Ale |
Samuel Smith’s brewery was founded in 1758 and is the oldest brewery in Yorkshire. As England’s largest county, many Yorkshiremen see it as a nation in its own right, staying true to many of its old traditions and customs.
Yorkshire Squares
One of these traditions displayed by Samuel Smith is the use of huge slate fermenters called Yorkshire Squares. The squares are giant open brewing vats lined with slabs of slate. Yorkshire’s slate was once used to pave the streets of London as well as to make fermenters for many English breweries. The slate fermenters impart a soft roundness to the beer’s character. Samuel Smith’s beers are also known for their buttery flavor and full bodiness. It is for this reason that Samuel Smith makes some of the best beers in the world.
The Brown Ale
The Nut Brown pours to a, you guessed it, brown color. Although I didn’t hold the two side by side, I think this is lighter than the famous Newcastle, but at the same time it has a great clearness. It’s fairly well carbonated and produces a nice light-brown head.
The nose on this brew is fairly subtle. There are notes of malt, a little hop, and of course a hint of nuttiness. Upon tasting, the beer is fairly light in body. If served chilled you’ll probably only notice the maltiness. However as the beer warms and opens up there’s also an excellent nuttiness, probably best described as hazelnut. The finish is long, smooth and very pleasant, with a small hint of hops.
As brown ales go this one is excellent, light in the body, but very malty and nutty by comparison. It’s also smoother than your average brown. As with most good ales, this beer would work perfectly well by itself, but would also match up well to most any food. My preference here would be a spicy curry or stir-fry, or a good paella.
This is another excellent member of the Samuel Smith’s portfolio, and a World Beer Championship gold medal winner. I would have to rate it slightly lower than the imperial, oatmeal and taddy porter, but a great brew nonetheless.
