We recently got a new Sony HD camcorder as a kit from B&H photo, and it came with this CF (compact flash) recording unit. This little device takes a Sony F series battery, which most Sony camcorders also use, but also comes with an AC adapter. We are using a 16Gb Sandisk Ultra III card with no issues. The device connects via a firewire (iLink) cable to the camcorder. Once you have everything setup, the device will record whenever the camcorder is recording. Some camcorders can record just to the flash device but some require the tape to be in the camera also. We use the tape as a backup and do all our editing from the CF card.
Once you are done recording you just connect the device to your computer and it shows up as a memory card, or you can eject the CF card and use your own card reader to pull the files off. The files are saved as M2T files in HD mode and can be read by Premiere Pro CS4. This new workflow has drastically reduced our post production! In the past you had to allocate at least 1:1 time to get the video files onto our editing computer, now it can be done at least 10X faster.
The CF card is formatted at Fat32 so there is a 4Gb file size limit, but we have not had any issues just pulling multiple files into Premiere Pro. The device is very well built and compliments our Sony HD camcorder nicely. It came with a nice bracket that mounts to the top shoe and splits into a Y so you can still have a shoe mount available for a mic or light, not sure it that was part of the kit or comes with the device. Keep in mind that the device only has a small LCD display for remaining time and other status stuff, there is no playback from the device.
Overall we are very happy to move into file manipulation instead of tape manipulation.
