| Rufster's Full Review: SanDisk Cruzer Mini (1 GB) USB 2.0 Flash Drive (DH... |
When flash drives began to become popular, I noticed all the business department teachers at school had one and enjoyed carrying it around, transferring files to and from school. It wasnt until this year when I caught the fever and simply just had to get one. Prices have drastically dropped since then and now flash drives are thankfully very reasonably priced now.
Through days of research and comparing flash drives, a rebate caught my eye for the SanDisk Cruzer Mini 1GB. At first I was looking at the Corsair flash drives, but they are encased in rubber also known as pocket lint remover and Lexar flash drives, but those are almost twice as thick as the Cruzer Mini. Simply put, the rebate saved my life for I now own a flash drive that doesnt attract pocket lint or take up two USB ports while plugged in.
Contained in the package are two extra caps (colored a light purple and yellow) and a SanDisk lanyard
that thing that straps around your neck. The best feature about the lanyard is that it attaches to the side of the flash drive. This allows you to place the cap at the end of the flash drive while its plugged in to a computer. And just in case you forget about this feature, if you lose a cap theres not one but two extras! And, oh yes, I almost forgot
you also get three stickers to place on the flash drive to use as labels.
The overall design of the SanDisk Cruzer Mini 1GB is extremely sleek and solid. I can sit here, give it a good squeeze, and I can tell its a high quality product. You can drop it, scratch it, throw it, rip it out of a USB port, wash it, and itll still work! The main aspect I noticed in other reviews is that other customers where tremendously surprised after accidentally leaving the flash drive in their pockets to go in the washing machine that the flash drive came out working perfectly! Length wise, the flash drive is a bit long (almost three inches), but the width makes up for it only being the fatness of a USB port.
As for using the SanDisk Cruzer Mini 1GB, well, if you can plug something into a USB port you can use this flash drive. For Microsoft Windows XP users, simply shove the flash drive into a USB port and whether its 2.0 or 1.1 itll still pop up, install in a few seconds, and become one of your removable storage drives listed in My Computer. For you old schoolers still rocking Microsoft Windows 98 or other operating systems, either download the drivers online or use the dinky little mini CD that comes in the package to enable the flash drive and boom youre done!
For me, the SanDisk Cruzer Mini 1GB popped up immediately and contained some rather useless programs. Instead of dealing with those I recommend to just reformat the drive by right-clicking on its label in My Computer and selecting Format
this will take care of those pesky starter programs. Formatting, well, that just takes a few seconds
beats using floppy disks! Another thing with the Cruzer Mini is the super-bright yellow activity LED that pops on when the flash drive is connected and flickers when the flash drive is in use.
Capacity wise, after formatting you only get 974MB to work with. I giggle when other reviewers complain about this because thats how it is with all storage devices from hard drives to MP3 players. Transfer speeds are average but the SanDisk Cruzer Mini 1GB is not an OCZ Rally flash drive containing dual channel memory. If you want the fastest speeds available then purchase an OCZ Rally flash drive instead. Otherwise, if speed is not an issue then the Cruzer Mini will suit you just right.
Ever since I purchased my flash drive Ive been constantly using it. You really do use it more than you can ever imagine. When working with clients, my laptop and flash drive are ideal. When fixing up my friends computers, it can store applications needed in the process making it ideal for that as well. It also gets me the girls when Im walking around with the SanDisk lanyard
all the ladies like a guy who buys quality products.
