Saxguy's Full Review: SanDisk Sansa m240 (1 GB) MP3 Player
In December, I got the Sandisk M240 1GB MP3 player from Amazon.com for under $60. It was among the lowest-priced (under $60) 1GB players for a legitimate brand. I also liked the FM tuner and voice recorder features. I saw that a few buyers were having trouble with it freezing up, but I figured that was a fluke.
It was very easy to connect through the supplied usb2 chord. My computer and Rhapsody detected it right away. Downloads were fast and smooth.
I enjoyed the sound quality, although I used a set of headphones instead of the supplied ear buds, because I dont like ear buds.
The unit put the songs in alphabetical order by title, as opposed to artist. The menu screen was cumbersome, although the buttons were responsive enough so that I could play what I wanted. It was easier to play using the Rhapsody computer interface. At home, I would listen through the computer using Rhapsody.
I loved the 2oz weight and the small size. I was going to use it when I took public transportation a few weeks ago. But no. On the train, and during the entire seminar, the menu reported rebuilding the library please wait. I thought it due to it being 95% full after loading 12 hours of MP3s. Once home, I connected it to my PC and Rhapsody recognized it, so I thought it would be ok.
Last week, rhapsody crashed and I saw that my PC no longer recognized the player.
I called tech support today, which is overseas, and they answered. Not bad for a Saturday. The tech realized that it was freezing and my computer wouldnt detect it, so he arranged for an RMA. I will send it next week. Sandisk is providing postage both ways. The manual says that for warranty repairs, the user pays for shipping to Sandisk. So, I figure there is a widespread problem with this model.
I cant recommend this product until the quality problems are fixed. When it works, it works ok, although 1 GB isnt as much as I thought it would be. If you do buy, use a local store where it can be returned or exchanged.
