Howard_Creech's Full Review: SanDisk (SDSDRH-4096) (4 GB) SDHC Card
Photography has been around for more than one hundred and sixty years, but in the last ten years this venerable medium has seen more changes than in the prior one hundred and fifty years, combined. One of the most fundamental changes is that images aren't recorded on coated glass plates or slow speed slide film anymore - modern photographers use flash memory cards.
I received the SanDisk Ultra II 4GB SDHC (Secure Digital - High Capacity) card with a Pentax K10D digital SLR that I am currently testing for another website. The 4GB SanDisk Ultra II SDHC card looks just like a standard SD card, but that's where the similarities end. SDHC cards have been redesigned to support higher capacities (4GB to 32GB) than standard SD cards. SDHC cards will only work in SDHC compatible cameras and other flash memory devices.
Capacity
The SanDisk Ultra II 4GB SDHC card will hold (according to SanDisk) more than 2000 high-resolution images or up to 8 hours of MPEG 4 video.
Speed
Not only does the SanDisk Ultra II 4GB SDHC card provide some truly impressive storage capacity, it is also very (60X) fast. Some shooters like to use burst mode to nail the decisive moment when shooting complex action and the Sandisk Ultra II 4GB SDHC card will keep up with most high-speed capture modes.
Using the bundled SanDisk MicroMate USB 2.0 card reader, I transferred thirty-six 10 megapixel JPEGs in a bit more than one minute from the SanDisk Ultra II 4GB SDHC card to my friend's computer. The SanDisk Ultra II 4GB SDHC Flash Memory Card provides (according to SanDisk) write speeds of up to 9MB per second and read speeds of up to 10MB per second.
Construction/Durability
SD (Secure Digital) flash memory cards are about the size (32mmX24mm) of a standard postage stamp and the exterior shell is constructed of a durable hard plastic. SD cards have no moving parts - so failure rates are very low. As long as the cards are handled with reasonable care and stored in the included protective plastic case when not in use, they should provide years of dependable service.
Conclusion
The SanDisk Ultra II 4GB (60X) SDHC Flash Memory Card does exactly what it is supposed to do and it does it very quickly. My only complaints are that I have to send the card back when I return the Pentax K10D and that it won't work in my trusty SanDisk 12-in-1 card reader.
