Pros: Great flavor, smooth, balanced, inexpensive, free shipping, environmentally conscious.
San Francisco Bay Coffee is a family owned and operated roaster based out of California. They have been roasting premium coffee since 1979, with their large bags of coffee available at wholesale clubs like Costco. Although I shop at Costco, I was unfamiliar with this brand. I discovered San Francisco Bay Coffee searching for affordable K-Cups on Amazon.
San Francisco Bay has created a K-Cup hybrid that has the standard foil top with a filter-like basket. While this seems less likely to keep your coffee as fresh, it certainly saves on plastic waste and makes these K-Cups significantly cheaper than the competition. I purchased an 80-Count box of Fog Chaser for $27, bringing the cost per unit under thirty-five cents. Considering the average price of a K-cup is around sixty cents, this product is nearly half the price of other brands.
In order to maintain freshness, the K-Cups are packaged in smaller plastic bags. I do not take any special precautions after opening an eight-count bag. This portion will last me nearly a week, but the coffee does not seem to go bad or get stale during that time frame from unsealing the bag to use. I suppose you could use a twist tie to help maintain freshness if you plan on taking longer than a week to consume the entire bag.
Fog-Chaser is a pleasant, full-bodied blend that is a combination of the Breakfast Blend and French Roast. It is intended to be a medium blend, but I find that it holds up to the largest cup setting on my Keurig. The coffee has a slight chocolate quality with a smooth mouth feel. I have also tried the French Blend, which is a bit richer, but not nearly as smooth as Fog Chaser. This one is a winner.
Ordered through Amazon, I was able to get this product shipped without paying for shipping. It arrived a few days later. The case was decorated with a variety of jungle scenes mixed with policy statements indicating the good deeds this company has done for the environment. They also tout their creds as a Fair Trade product. While those factors are important, I am not going to give a great rating based on good deeds. In this case, San Francisco Bay Fog Chaser coffee is really good and surprisingly affordable. Four stars.
