| booknet's Full Review: San Miguel Pale Pilsen |
San Miguel is a wonderful drink. I first tried it when I was given some as a present. I'm not a huge lager drinker, preferring German beers and Real Ales, but it was the middle of summer and at the time I would have drank anything!
On first taste I was amazed - it went down really easily and quenched my thirst very well. It left a pleasant, clean after - taste, and was generally very refreshing.
I found it very easy to get through several bottles in one go, but since it isn't a very strong drink this isn't a bad thing.
I prefer to drink it in the smaller bottles (250ml) as the larger 1.5L bottles, whilst being cheaper, don't keep it very fresh.
Once opened, it goes flat very quickly (an hour or so) and this seriously detracts from the taste. Other than this minor problem, though, it's hard to find fault with it. I enjoy drinking it both at room temperature and chilled. It is better slightly chilled, as most drinks are, but even warm it goes down well, just don't leave it open too long before drinking!
I have tried it once from a can instead of a bottle, but it seemed to be flatter and slightly stale when I tried it this way. This could be bad storage, or just an inherent problem with cans (I find Waggledance is nicer from a bottle too.) but either way, storage seems to be a major issue with this drink.
I find that San Miguel goes well with most foods. It doesn't overwhelm mild tastes but at the same time it will soothe your mouth after stronger tastes like a hot curry. It is a very versatile drink!
If you're a younger person, you may find San Miguel isn't a very fashionable drink - in the UK it's considered lightweight and therefore a sign that you can't hold your drink, although considering it's close in percentage some more popular lagers I don't understand why!
That said, if you drink for taste, not street cred, then this is a good lager. Beer drinkers should try it as it has a different quality to many lagers, and lager drinkers will appreciate it's refreshing taste. It's best drank in the summer in my opinion, but it is good at any time of the year.
I live in the UK, and it's hard to get hold of in my area - only one shop stocks it and even they only get it in on the odd occasion, but whenever I see it I buy it. Perhaps in America it's easier to find. I hope so anyway, as you should all try it!
