| LuzonTS's Full Review: San Miguel Pale Pilsen |
During the numerous coup attempts, assassinations, typhoons, and the occasional earthquake or volcano this was the one constant that I could count on as a young man during my three year stay in the Philippines.
I had my first San Miguel during my first "bar hopping" run and fell in love at first sip. You could taste the malt, cereals and hops but there was also an elusive taste not unlike what freshly cut grass smells. It is very crisp and light. Not overpowering by any means and rarely will you feel weighed down.
We used to joke about the beers fluctuating alcohol content. Your first beer could have .5% alcohol content and the next could have 10%. I didn't really believe it was that bad until a representative from the company testified at a friends trial that it did in fact have a content that fluctuated, but not quite to those extremes.
This pilsner was first brewed in 1890 by an entrepreneur named Don Ycaza who had received a royal grant from the Spanish government. The first brewery was established in Manila and today it has become the third largest selling brand in Asia. Whenever I have asked a Filipino friend for a beer he has always placed a San Miguel in my hand. It has never been any other brand even though four out of every five beers consumed in the PI is a San Miguel.
The beer does come in a plain squat brown 10.82 fluid ounce bottle and is sold abroad in six pack cartons. The "label" is actually painted on in white letters with a red crest. If you want to learn more about the beer and see an in depth discussion with pictures as to the manufacturing process you can go on-line to:

It has become my favorite beer as well as that of many of my friends who have had the pleasure of trying this wonderful brew. As a matter of fact my brother-in-law who is currently residing in Japan picked me up two six packs. He had also brought me other gifts but this was the only one I really cared about! If ever in Asia I highly suggest you try this brand at least once. I cannot suggest the USA import version as the taste is just not the same.
