Pros: Awesome rich black ink, great for posters and art projects, thick barrel.
Cons: A little smelly, permanent ink, needs to be recapped or it will dry out.
Sharpies are one of the coolest Sanford products in regards to permanent markers. Not only can you get them in a plethora of sizes and colors but they also have art kits, metallics, extra fine art markers and the monster sized 'extra bold' paint markers. How are these different from a regular Sharpie? They have a fat, wide, rectangular shaped tip to them and the ink is released when the tip is pressed to a surface. Now, I know what you are thinking, that could cause a real mess if you are a slow writer and it could cause paper to warp. That's not the case with these. It will release as much ink as necessary and there are times when you can end up saturating the paper but you have to sit there with the tip pressed to it for at least ten seconds for that to happen. One of the confusing things about this is that it is marketed as a paint marker; it has the same ink as a permanent marker from Sharpie but since the tip is so much wider and larger it is pimped out as something that can 'paint' surfaces. This does not have a brush tip to it and if you did try to paint with it, well, you would be there for a long, long time.

Most people will assume that these can only be used for making posters or signs but you can use them pretty much anywhere. Because of the size and shape of the tip they are excellent for making straight borders but you will want to use a ruler that has a gap at the bottom so the ink doesnt get sucked under it or smear. The ink does dry fast on most surfaces but noting is instantaneous so you do have to take some precautions with these. When my neighbor handed me four of the five colors in the series I was in heaven. I am still searching for the white one so I have no idea how that on performs but so far the four that I have tried have all worked perfectly. They have been used on everything from cardboard to poster board, card stock, newsprint and copy paper, all with varying results. Generally the thinner the paper the worse the results; the exception is Tyvek mailers, glossy paper and anything with a coating. It may take a little longer for this to dry on those surfaces but you can lay it on thick.
If you need to add some color to your poster or projects you can get these in five colors; black, red, blue, yellow and white. There are other colors available in the paint market series but they are regular, fine and extra fine tipped. It remains to be seen if they will be releasing more colors in this extra bold series but I hope that they will consider a five color set or at the very least adding some more colors to this size. The barrels are easy to grip and use even though they are oversized and chunky; I would be a little hesitant about letting kids under the age of six use these because you never know when they are going to end up having a creative moment and start making the walls. I like the fact that these are non-toxic but wouldnt want to see what a kid Annabelle's age would do with one of these if they were left alone in a room. She went a little crazy with a highlighter once and I don't want to relive trying to remove that from paint, especially with black ink.
As far as safety is concerned, these are AP Certified to be non-toxic. There is a slight smell to them but nothing that is as bad as the industrial chisel tip markers. If you are using a ton of these at once to make posters or for a school project you will want to open the windows for some ventilation. Clean up can be a little tricky; since this is a permanent ink you are going to want to try to avoid getting it on clothing and skin but if it does happen you will want to treat it as soon as possible. With the lighter colors you should be able to get them out of clothing with a few washes but with the black and blue, you may have to settle for a little bit of a residual stain. For skin, wash well with soap and water and if possible use a finger brush or scrubber pad to try and remove as much as possible.
Are there any negatives to the Extra Bold Black Paint Marker? The only two that are notable are the capping system and squeak level. These need to be recapped as soon as you are done using them and because of the fat tip of them, if you don't recap them correctly they could cause a huge mess if they start rubbing on other things. You should hear a nice loud snap or click when the cap is replaced, if you don't hear it, try it again. It's better to be safe than sorry. The squeak factor is something that can happen with wide or fat tipped markers. When you run the tip over something or try to color something in you can be met with a rather obnoxious squeaking or squealing noise. The only time I have has this happen with the Extra Bold Black Paint Marker is when it was used on the shiny side of poster board or on glossy paper. Other than that, it is pretty quiet to use.
The Bottom Line
These aren't something that get a lot of use but now that I have had the chance to use them at the house and shop I can say that they are a great product. The average selling price for them in about $4.50 at office supply stores but I am sure that if Wal-Mart starts stocking them they will sell them for a little less there. Barring the squeak problems and the smaller caps, these are great oversized markers that allow you to cover a large area in a minimal amount of time but with accuracy that you just can't get from a paint brush. I am hoping that Sanford will add some other colors to the series or at the very least a somewhat affordable five pack of the colors that are currently available.
As always, thanks for the visit
