Pros: bright yellow highlighter ink, chisel point, no bleed-through on 20-pound paper, non-toxic
Cons: fat barrel may be uncomfortable for some; does not work well on all materials
The Bottom Line: I highlighted the Bottom Line, and it changed in color from blue to black. Is it the highlighter ... or is the Bottom Line part chameleon?

| dlstewart's Full Review: Sanford Major Accent Highlighter Fluorescent Yello... |
As with most offices, we use highlighters in a variety of colors. My favorite color highlighter is yellow, so its lucky for me that the office supply buyer purchases Sanford Major Accent Yellow Highlighters.
Description
These highlighters have a fat yellow barrel with a diameter of 3/4". Shaped like a pen, it is 4 3/4" long. When the cap is removed, the tip of the cap is designed to fit neatly into the back end of the highlighter. The cap fits flush into the end of the highlighter, like an Apollo spacecraft docking into the lunar module.
Sanford has built this highlighter with a chisel tip. The tip at its longest point is 1/4" and slants. The chisel tip allows the writer control drawing narrow or wide lines. Depending upon how much pressure is applied when using the highlighter, determines how fast the ink dries. As a rule, with medium pressure, the ink dries quickly. Even using heavy pressure, when the ink dries, there is no blotching. The ink dries evenly with a uniform yellow color.
Sanford is a member of the Art and Creative Materials Institute, and as a member has certified that this highlighter is non-toxic. These highlighters are composed of water, diethylene glycol, dyes and additives. The highlighter has an almost unnoticeable odor and definitely no odor when the ink is dry on paper.
My Experiences
I have been able to draw up to a 1/4" wide line with this highlighter. The barrel is a bit thick for a completely comfortable hold, but its not so uncomfortable that I hate to use the marker. I would not want to use this Sanford marker for prolonged periods of time. If I were a consistent highlighter user, then I would want a highlighter with a narrower barrel ... something slimmer like a pen.
This highlighter produces a bright yellow color. It is easy to see whatever is highlighted. And the yellow is certainly eye-catching. It immediately grabs my attention. The ink in the highlighters lasts a long time, too ... so it takes me awhile to go through the ink in one of these highlighters.
As part of my job, I highlight a variety of material. Not only do I use a highlighter on computer printouts but also on my calendar to mark important dates. A great feature is that this highlighter does not bleed through the paper. Here are some of my experiences using the highlighter on white 20-pound multi-purpose paper:
Ballpoint Pen Excellent Ive highlighted various colors of Bic and Papermate pens: blue, black, green and red. Great results, and the pen inks do not change color.
Sharpie Permanent Markers Excellent Though Ive only highlighted the black and red colors, the marker ink remains true to color and does not smear.
Marks-A-Lot Marker Excellent Both black and red Marks-A-Lot markers highlight well.
Laser Printer Excellent The printouts from the HP LaserJet 1000 always highlight easily and look good.
Fax Machine Excellent We have two plain-paper fax machines in the office (different brands). It is easy to highlight material on these faxes with no blurring or discoloration. I dont know how these markers would work on thermal fax machine paper since we do not have this type of fax machine in the office.
Pencil Good If looking closely at the penciled words that are highlighted, I can see where a smidgen of the lead has mixed with the yellow. Its not obvious, though. I use a Dixon Oriole pencil with a 2.5/F lead.
Flair Markers Average I highlighted the blue, black and red colors. Immediately, I noticed that when the highlighter was used over the blue Flair, the ink turned black. The ink slightly smeared on the blue and black Flairs, with the black ink smearing the most. There was no smudging with the red ink.
Gel Pen Ink Poor I dont use a gel pen; however, I tested the highlighter using a Uni-ball refill for the Gel Impact RT pen. Dont ask me why the refill is in the cabinet when no one uses gel pens ... but thats another story! The blue gel ink smears a lot when the highlighter is used. Even when I let the ink sit to set for fifteen minutes, it still smeared.
Inkjet Printer Poor This Sanford highlighter smears the inkjet ink. The other day, a coworker gave me a printout from her HP DeskJet 895cxi. When I highlighted several phrases, the black inkjet ink smeared, turning the yellow point of the highlighter black.
Purchasing
These highlighters come in multi-packs. The 4-pack comes with four markers on a blister card. The 12-pack comes with twelve markers in a cardboard box. I have yet to see them for sale individually.
Staples 4-pack $2.27 and 12-pack $6.19
OfficeMax 4-pack $2.59
Office Depot 12-pack $6.08
Summary
The Sanford Major Accent Yellow Highlighter is a good buy. They get the job done so long as one is not highlighting material written with a gel pen or printed with an inkjet printer. Considering the office has purchased these highlighters, Im quite happy to use them. However, if I were purchasing a highlighter with my own hard-earned money ... then I would pick another style, something slimmer to better fit the hand and that can handle highlighting inkjet printer copy.
I hope you have found this review useful.
