| Freak369's Full Review: Sanford Sharpie Extra Fine Industrial Markers Shar... |
Until a few months ago we were using the standard fine point Sharpie markers on people who were getting body piercings. We never really had any problem with them or how they worked on skin but we were looking for something that would write better. If you have ever tried to use any type of Sharpie marker on skin you know that one of two things will happen; either it will write for a few seconds then stop or the ink will bleed into the crevices of the skin. When you are trying to mark off an area of the body that is going to get pierced you need something that is going to leave a solid mark that you are going to be able to see. Most of the piercings that we do are belly buttons, nipples, ear cartilage and noses. Yes we do get people who want genitals and other sensitive areas from time to time but most of the customers stick to the popular body parts. They are trusting us to properly align things and mark the entrance and exit points so everything is even so if there is a better product on the market, well buy it regardless of the cost.
Sanford Sharpie Industrial Permanent Marker Extra Fine Point Black Ink
One of the biggest differences between the regular and industrial extra fine point markers from Sharpie is its ability to write on more surfaces. With regular Sharpie permanent markers you can write on glass, plastic, clothing and paper but with the industrial ones you can also write on slick surfaces without the ink taking a long time to dry. Since we got these to be used on skin, that was out biggest concern - how it would hold up after the skin was sanitized, if it would bleed and if it would feather. These were suggested to us by a client that works in a hospital laboratory; he said that the industrial ones were a better pick because you could use them on surfaces that regular Sharpies would have trouble with. He brought us a couple of different markers to try out and we all agreed that the extra fine one was best for body piercing. I stepped up to the plate, took one for the team and volunteered to get pierced after having an area marked off with one of these. I was more than pleased at how the ink stayed on the skin and left a clean mark without spreading or feathering.
Outside of body piercing these are great to use on surfaces that regular Sharpie markers have trouble writing on. Slick or glossy photographs, negatives, color prints and plastic bottles are just a few of the items that we have used these markers on and weve all had great results from them. In most cases a regular Sharpie will work on common everyday surfaces but if you are worried about writing coming off, the industrial version is the way to go. This resists water better than regular Sharpie markers and is smear proof thanks to the almost instant drying ink. Since this is the extra fine point we can use it for more than just marking off skin for piercings; we can mark edge lines for sectional pieces of artwork that needs to be layered, fill lines for disposable ink bottles, autoclaved pieces and other things around the shop. The ink isnt 100% permanent, it can be washed off it you use a hard sided sponge or brillo.
For all intents and purposes, these are almost identical to the regular extra fine point permanent markers from Sharpie; they have the same shaped barrel, tip construction, ink color and weight and cap. The barrel on these is inked differently so you will be able to tell that they are the industrial version rather than the regular but outside of that, you use them the same way. The ink will bleed through thinner papers and isnt intended for letter writing [the same warnings that apply to regular Sharpies apply to these]. The ink will stain clothing, fabrics and carpeting so you should always recap this as soon as you are done using it. Threes no noticeable smell from the marker but a few people in the shop who have sensitive noses say that there is a faint marker smell to them. Sharpie does make these in red and blue in case you need more color options.
Price
The first few that we got were from a customer, when we tried them out and determined that the extra fine point was the best one for our needs we started looking for them online. We found a few sites that sold them in larger packs for $5.99 for a dozen. So far we havent been able to find any store, retail or online, that has had these in single to two packs. These do cost a little more than regular Sharpie markers but if you need something for an industrial setting it is well worth it to spend a few extra pennies to get better results.
The Bottom Line
While we have specific needs for certain types of markers in the shop, these are something that we use for more than just marking skin. They are something that we can count on to not run or bleed when writing or working on thinner papers [vellum, tracing etc] and on plastic containers, they are a must have so they can be cleaned properly without having to worry that the ink is going to smudge, get removed or be hard to read. I have always had great luck with Sharpie products in the past and this industrial version of their extra fine point permanent marker is no exception. While it does cost a little more than their other markers, to me it is worth it. If you work in an industrial setting of any kind and havent had luck with regular permanent markers, you may want to give this industrial version a try. The extra fine point lets you write or draw on surfaces without taking up a lot of space and the ink dries almost instantly.
As always, thanks for the read!
