Black Sharpie Marker -- With an Extra Fine Point!

Written: May 3, 2008 (Updated May 3, 2008)
Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
Pros:black permanent ink, quick-drying, water-resistant, durable, virtually no odor
Cons:the black ink could be darker
The Bottom Line: A Black Sharpie Marker with an extra-fine point is always available in the office or at home.

Sharpie markers are a must for me, whether for business or home use. Usually fine point markers are scattered around the place, but I always make sure I have at least one Black Sharpie Extra Fine Point Marker both in the office and at home.

Description

This Sharpie marker measures just under 5 1/2" long x 1/2" wide. The squared off black cap identifies the ink color. The cap fits over the marker tip as well as slides onto the back of the marker so that the cap doesn’t become lost. There is a flexible plastic clip is on the cap so that it can attach to a pocket, papers or a notebook.

The smooth barrel on this marker is round and is comfortable to hold. There is no fancy rubber grip or special design features. This is a straight-forward Sharpie marker with black permanent ink. The marker writes with permanent non-toxic ink.

According to the manufacturer, do not use this marker to write letters. It is also not designed to write on cloth.

My Experiences

The extra-fine tip of this marker writes in a much narrower line than the fine point marker. The line is so narrow that I find the ink fades out when I write a checkmark. At other times, while writing a longer sentence, the marker doesn’t deliver a consistent flow of ink. Sometimes this is because of how I write, the uneven pressure I apply while handwriting. For writing shorter words (such as labeling), this marker works great.

In comparison, the fine point marker delivers a much bolder line in a deep black color. The black color of the extra-fine marker is not as deep, and at times looks faded if comparing writing from the two markers side-by-side.

Be careful when using this extra-fine point marker. Perhaps another reason the manufacturer says not to use this marker for letter writing because they know the bleed-through potential. After writing with this marker in sentences on paper … the page beneath the one I was writing on is covered (and I mean covered!) with dots of black ink.

So why do I like this marker? At times I need that extra-fine point in permanent black ink. A space might be too small to write using a fine point Sharpie. Or at times I need a permanent marker but with that extra-fine writing tip. This marker works well for those occasions.

At work, several of my coworkers use this extra-fine point marker to write on computer components on the manufacturing floor. It is also popular for writing on white labels or colored dots (for inventory purposes).

Is this my marker of choice? No. Given an option, I will always select the Sharpie fine point marker over this extra-fine point. I prefer the darker lines of Sharpie fine point markers.

One excellent point about this marker is that I don’t notice any odor when using it. The point remains sharp, too. A big plus!

Purchasing

These black extra-fine point markers cost $1.09 each from Staples.com.

Summary

There are times when I need to use a Black Sharpie Extra Fine Point Marker. I rely on the Sharpie brand name when it comes to permanent markers. The markers last a long time and are definitely work the money.

I hope you found this review useful.

Enjoy your day,
