Written: Jul 04 '03 (Updated Jul 08 '03)
Product Rating:
Pros: Comfortable, Smoothness, retractable(no cap needed)
Cons: The Price, Ink doesn't dry as quick as others
The Bottom Line: Once again, Sanford who owns Uniball has developed another product that I would call perfection at its best, even if it is a couple more bucks.
kparsons13's Full Review: Sanford Uni-Ball Gel Impact Rt Retractable Gel Pen...
I am not sure when it began, probably back in high school but somewhere in between then and now I have become a pen fanatic. I am not the type to want the newest pen on the market or flashy pens, just a pen that write smoothly and fits comfortably in my hand. I couldnt begin to tell you how many different pens that I have but it is just as bad as my shoe collection, which is also out of control.
I am not sure what it is about a writing instrument that could possibly get me so excited to try and then to have but there is something dorky inside of me that just screams out for it. At my last job my manager and I would try new pens together all the time and see which ones we liked and the ones that needed to back to the design team. It was just something fun to do to pass time while normal people would probably find something constructive to do, I was testing out pens.
Well that is how I learned about the Uniball Gel Impact RT (Retractable) 1.00 bold Ink Pen. I remember that I was with my fiancé at our local OfficeMax, that heaven on earth I like to refer to, and he spotted the pen. This is one area that he actually appreciates my extremist attitude because he shares it almost as much as I do. There was one pen there and the cost was $2.49. At this point we were not scrimping and scraping for money so I said, Why not? Lets take it home and try it and see if it is any good. I got my precious pen home safely along with the various other valuables. I took it out of its package, in fact I think I ripped it out because I was so anxious to try it. If only you were there to witness; the spark in my eyes, the smile across my face, the amazement of the touch of the Uniball Gel Impact RT Pen that had found its way into my hand and instantaneously into my heart. The Uniball Gel Impact RT Pen is my second heaven on earth where the angels are singing all around me.
It is almost six inches in length when it is not retracted. There is a black top with a black clip attached to it for shirt pockets. Then as you head down there is checkered silver and charcoal pattern on about three inches of the pen that is smooth as silk. There is a small clear space where you can see the ink color next that is ¼ of a centimeter long. As you continue there is a one and half rubber, smooth grip wrapped around the pen. The Uniball Gel Impact RT Pen is topped off at the bottom with a triangular silver, bold pointed tip. Sounds gorgeous doesnt it?
The Uniball Gel Impact Pen and the Way it Performs
I am not sure if many of you have written with a bold point pen but it is the way to go. However there is also a drawback to this as the ink does not last nearly as long as most pens. I am willing to take that drawback on and overlook it. The pen fits nicely in your hand as you grip the rubber but the smoothness of the checkered area is comfortable. It is difficult to describe the way that it writes. It is a Gel Pen that has made a huge IMPACT on my life. Does that help? I didnt think so. It has a thick, bold line that is solid and noticed. It is extremely comfortable to write with. Another drawback I should mention though is due to the bold tip, the gel/ink does not dry as quickly as you may want it to so you need to get used to it before you just jump right in.
If this pen was a car it would be a BMW convertible and other pens would be like my Chevy Cavalier. The BMW would just pass me by while not being too flashy but enough to catch my attention. This pen will reach out and grab you when you are looking through the pen isle. It may only be gray and metallic silver, but just knowing that it is auto-retractable, has smooth ink flow, and a comfortable grip should be enough.
The Uniball Gel Impact RT Pen comes in three colors:
Red
Blue
Black
The refills for the Uniball Gel Impact RT Pen are about $1.99 for two refills. I realize that this sounds steep but I you just have to trust me and know that it is worth it.

A Little About The Sanford Corporation who Owns Uniball
I have brought up the Sanford Corporation when I did a piece on the Sharpie Chisel Point Marker but for those of you who have not read that article, here is a little about Sanford.
Sanford has been around since 1887 and since then as far as the pen market goes has roller pens, free ink pens, and gel pens. Sanford now owns the following companies:
Sanford is a wonderful business who contributes to a fund known as Partner in Hope. Sanford contributes financially on a yearly basis to this California based location. Partners in Hope is a place where research is done to help fight against cancer and to hopefully someday cure cancer. I stand behind any company who contributes financially to society whether it is the community or research, especially since my own grandmother died of breast cancer. Sanford also does not believe in testing on any animals which is another reason why I love this company so much.
At Uniballs website, www.uniball.com, which is a very cool website to see even if you arent into pens as much as I am, you can sign up to be part of a Consumer Involvement Program where you can go to local testing facility to try out new products or be involved in focus groups about a product. If I wasnt afraid to go outside, I would be there in a heartbeat.
The Removal of Stains for Pens from Uniballs Website
To remove most stains from most surfaces, Sanford recommends you try Ammodex ink and stain remover. Amodex is not sold in stores. You can call them for more information at (203) 335-1255.
Your best chance at complete stain removal with all Sanford inks on all surfaces is to use Amodex! It removes virtually any ink or food stain on virtually any fabric or surface. Best of all, it will work as well after two weeks as it will after two hours - so it is probably worth the wait for your favorite or expensive garments. If you plan to use Amodex, do not attempt to treat the stain first - even rinsing in water can reduce the solution's effectiveness.
On their website.... www.uniball.com.... you can find a vast amount of information regarding the stain removal for different circumstances should you need it.
I wish I could do a better description of this amazing Uniball Gel Impact RT Pen that has definitely made a strong Impression on my pen collection. It is incredibly smooth and comfortable to write with. I also appreciate the Sanford Ink Guarantee that if I do find a fault with their merchandise I can return it. If you are a pen lover as much as I am, I tell you to splurge and try it but be careful, they can be an expensive addiction. I should know.
p.s. SANFORD WHO IS THE PARENT COMPANY OF UNIBALL IS A CRUELTY FREE COMPANY WHEN IT COMES TO ANIMALS. THEY DO NOT TEST THEIR PRODUCTS ON ANY ANIMALS!!! woohoo!!!
