cheetah1's Full Review: Sangean SG622 AM/FM/SW Radio
This is a rewrite of my initial review that I did 5 years ago on this Sangean SG622 shortwave radio. The radio was thrown in the garbage the other day. It was no longer in operable condition. After sitting in a kitchen shelf for a few years I took it down to use it but found it no longer usable. The radios volume kept cutting in and out. I opened up the radio to look inside, but just opening up the radio made matters worse as the band selector switch on top broke off.
The radio always had a problem with the volume cutting in and out while the radio was being moved around and upon closer observation inside the radio I noticed one of the two connectors of the negative battery terminals were broken off.
This is a 10 band shortwave radio with AM and FM reception included. The radio has excellent selectivity and the receiver is very sensitive which is exactly what a shortwave radio needs more than anything else.
The radio is made in China and has that typical silver finish that you find on so many of their electronic items. I'm impressed with Chinese electronic items but I think it's a matter of luck to get a Chinese shortwave radio that will operate for years with no problems. I think a large percentage of these radios break down for one reason or another. I really don't think one brand is better than the other.
The radio is about 6 1/2 inches wide 1 1/4 inches deep and about 3 1/2 inches from top to bottom. The speaker is about 2 inches wide and provides good reception and fidelity for music and voice reproduction. I was always impressed with this radios audio quality. There is a slide selector on top of the radio to change bands and also an earphone jack on the side. The radio uses 3 AA batteries or a 200 MW 4.5 volt adaptor which is not included.
In my initial review I complained about the radio not having a case but the radio is so cheap maybe it does not deserve one. I would not buy this radio again. If I needed another shortwave radio I would spend a bit more cash and get something nicer than this radio.
