Hello Kitty & My Melody: An Extremely Cute Collectible Pez Set

Collecting Pez is a hobby that I never expected to get into. It started with a couple of dispensers here and there and, like Playmobil figures and Neopet items, it grew a little out of control. I guess I also have to admit that the number of Hello Kitty items has increased over the years too. When I saw the collectible Hello Kitty Pez set it was something that I knew I wanted but there was no way I was paying $45.00 for it at a toy convention. When I had the chance to get it for $15.00 I jumped on the offer; the case had a small dent in the side but it wasn't anything that damaged the dispensers so it wasn't that big of a deal. This set includes four dispensers, eight rolls of Pez candy, one collectible tin and a small Hello Kitty Sanrio sticker sheet.
Sanrio Hello Kitty & MY Melody Pez Set
Much like the SpongeBob SquarePants Pez Collection and the Hello Kitty Pez Collection, this one is a bit lopsided because there are three Hello Kitty dispensers and one My Melody. The three Hello Kitty ones have slight variations to them so they aren't completely identical but that doesn’t change the fact that there are three of them. They are cute and they make for a great gift but I really wish that there were different dispensers in the set.
The purple stem dispenser has an almost clear flower and bunny, the red stem has a see through red bow and the light blue one has a pink flower. The My Melody is in pink with a pink clear head and white face. Contrary to what other sites say about the teal Hello Kitty dispenser, it does not glow in the dark. All four of the dispensers have the classic Pez design complete with Pez logo along the side and the Pez feet to help it stand up for display purposes without falling over. There are eight rolls of Pez candy in the tin; these are mounted on a cardboard insert to keep them from moving around.
The tint hat they are packaged in is very cute and has a full back with cut portion front; this is where you see the dispensers and the accompanying Pez candy. Everything is anchored well inside the tin so when you unpack it you will have a lot of plastic pieces to contend with. On the back of the tin there are some cute classic Hello Kitty designs, so far I have only seen one type of tin however if you got these in Japan or ordered them from an overseas vendor there is a chance you could get different styled tins. On the back of this one there are two hearts connected by a rainbow; inside one heart is Hello Kitty, inside the other heart is My Melody. There is a single metal latch that holds the case together and a plastic riveted handle that you can use if you want to carry this around or use it as a lunch box or purse.
In regards to the cut out section on the front; the window area is made of a hard plastic so you can use this for something else if you decide to remove the dispensers and candy from it. The dispensers are highly collectible both inside and outside the tin so if you remove them they will lose a little value but not that much. This sells for anywhere from $20.00 to as much as $75.00 but I was lucky to get one that was slightly damaged for $15.00. Annabelle confiscated the case when I opened it and took out the dispensers; she uses it to hold and keep some of her own Hello Kitty items and when she wants to take her prized Kitty possessions to someone else's house.
The Bottom Line
If I would have kept this set intact and not opened the tin I could have easily turned around and doubled my money on eBay. Even with the small dent on the side of the tin case, it would have still sold for at lest $25.00 to $30.00. In any event, that wasn't going to happen and I knew it. The dispensers got used, the candy was eaten and the case has seen a lot of use from Annabelle. Sure, Tommy and the brood cringe when they see another Hello Kitty item come into the house but I think they got over the initial nausea of the pink and purple Kitty invasion. If you collect Pez or are into Hello Kitty, this is a nice collectible set to look for.
