Pros: Sleek profile; no door to become cracked over time by the rangetop heat; reasonable cost
Cons: Turns on by itself
We purchased the Sanyo EM-S8000 model over-the-range microwave in 2001. Yes, it's been working just fine for ten years. We particularly wanted one without a door handle, since they seem to crack easily because of the heat from the rangetop. Last week, after removing heated food, I closed the door and it started, just momentarily -- a few seconds. Then turned off. Startled, I opened the door and re-closed it. Once again, it started and then stopped. I cleaned the latch off, thinking perhaps some grease or food had gotten into it, causing a problem -- wasn't anything there, but you never know. We decided to watch it carefully. Didn't act up again until this morning. I defrosted some bread, the signal buzzed and it turned off, light went out, etc. I removed the bread and closed the door. The microwave started up again and the light went on, automatically. Trying to turn it off with the Stop/Clear Button didn't work, so I had to just open the door. That turned it and the light off. Of course, just last night I sat down to read the new Consumer Reports (March 2012) about fires caused by appliances such as microwaves, so I'm really alarmed. Currently, the microwave's door is ajar and it will remain that way until we go to Best Buy and get a new one.
