| theword95's Full Review: Sanyo SCP 4000 Cell Phone |
I just bought the newest Sanyo, the SCP 4000. It runs on the Sprint PCS network, and all I can say is that it rocks.
It's display is indiglo blue, which far surpasses the usability of the old green displays. The controls and menus are extremely intuitive, and the options are endless. It includes the MiniBrowser, which allows you to use the Sprint internet with only the phone. I've used it only once, mainly because the internet costs $.39 a minute when you don't pay extra for it, but it was extremely fast and surprisingly useful.
THE GOOD
As for clarity, it is as good or better than any other digital phone I've used, and the earpiece can be VERY loud if you need it to be. Comfort? Well, it's one of the smallest phones I've ever seen, and it doesn't flip, so it isn't the best. The flip phones are much more comfortable, but you have to use 2 hands to answer them, and they are pretty thick when folded up, so I'd still go with the non-flip type. The battery life is amazing. I don't know the actual numbers, but even when I tried to I couldn't wear the thing down -- and I have the standard, not extended life, battery that comes with the phone.
THE BAD, BUT NOT SO UGLY
Accesories can be had, depending on where you live. In the college town of Columbia, MO there is nothing to be had. When home for the holidays in St. Louis, I found everything. The leather case - $15 - pretty much sucks. It doesn't protect the front of the phone with plastic or anything, and it doesn't fit very well. Just buy the $5 belt clip instead. The only problem I've had so far is the sound during a call will sometimes become really quiet, as if the volume was almost all the way down, then it comes back again. Sprint tells me it is not the network, so I may exchange the phone for another of the same type. We'll see what happens.
Bottom line: I love the coolness factor (blue-light display, internet browser) and the internet. Questionable dependability, but may not be the phone. My girlfriend has the ever popular StarTac Digital; the Sanyo blows it out of the water -- no comparison. I say buy it.
NEW NEWS!!!
I just returned the first phone and replaced it with another SCP 4000. It is safe to say that any concerns over quality are gone, this phone works perfectly. I'd also like to say that I've had a chance to use the Touchpoint Dual Band phone at great length, and the Sanyo far surpasses it. The ease of use of the Touchpoint is based on its "navigation button", which the Sanyo also has, however the Sanyo is much smaller and lighter, has a better battery, and an electro-lumenescent display. The only thing the Sanyo doesn't do is the schedule feature, which is a moot point since we all have $200 leather planners that we rely on anyhow. The Sanyo still rules.
p.s.
the phone pictured here is not the 4000, but the 3000. The 4000 has a mouse-like navigation button similar to the Touchpoint, and the display is blue, not green.
