Pros: Decent Vienna Lager, but not a great beer overall

The Bottom Line: A decent beer overall, but nothing to search far and wide for.

"On the seventh day of Christmas, my true love could not be grander, when she handed me, a Adirondack Amber."
about SARANAC
Saranac beers are brewed by the Matt Brewing Company, a brewery located in the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains in Central New York. Over a century old, the brewery is currently being run by the third and fourth generations of the Matt Family (Nick and Fred, respectively). Today, the company brews a number of different beers (27 different beers in the recent past, including seasonals and limited editions), as well as 5 different soft drinks.
about ADIRONDACK AMBER
I poured this one, not knowing what to expect; so far the Saranac 12-pack had been a mixture of good and bad. I like Amber's however, so I wanted to get to this one for a while.
When poured into the glass, the color was a dark orange with a slight white head. The first distinct flavors to hit my nose were ... well, almost non-existant, maybe only SLIGHTLY hoppy after warming a bit. I kept trying but could find almost nothing distinctive about it.
So, I had to go to the taste test to get a better impression of the beer. Brewed with caramel and two row malts and Cascade, Hallertauer and Mt. Hood hops, Adirondack Amber offers the German Amber style. Unfamiliar with Vienna Ambers, I expected a flavor more along teh lines of Fat Tire, but the result was more like a pale ale than an amber, perhaps due to it being the German or Vienna Amber style. The body was medium to slightly light, leaving little lingering mouth feel.
The flavor of the beer was on the bitter side, hoppy on the initial taste but with little to no finish. I kept drinking it to get a better impression, but like the nose, the beer itself had nothing distinctive about it.
final THOUGHTS
Not bad, but not one of their better offerings. I found little to distinguish this from their Pale Ale, and really wouldn't go out of my way to find this one.
random BEER FACT
Bohemian hops were so prized in the 800s that King Wenceslas ordered the death penalty for anyone caught exporting the cuttings, from which new plants could be grown.
