When I was growing up, I used to hear about all the famous people who would go to Sardi’s Restaurant before and after a Broadway show. So when my grown-up daughter and I decided to take a weekend jaunt to New York, Sardi’s came to mind as a good place for a pre-theater meal.
Since it was right across the street (on 44th) from Fosse, the musical show we had picked out for the evening, logistically it worked beautifully into our plans.
We didn’t know exactly what to expect, but walking through to our table we noticed all kinds of characatures (hand-drawn faces with exaggerated features) on the walls throughout the restaurant. In fact, there were several rows of them on each wall, covering almost all the available space. Apparently, after an “Opening” of a show, the cast would go to Sardi’s to celebrate and have an artist draw characatures of them, which then ended up on the walls of the restaurant.
Our table was in the back, on a side wall, so we both decided to sit facing out into the room, on the same side of the table. There was just too much to see for one of us to miss out on anything. The only drawback to that location was that we faced the post around which all the things were which the waiters needed to serve their patrons better. These included the water pitchers, silverware, napkins, and condiments.
Fortunately, the fellow who seemed in charge of that service area was friendly and visited with the various people seated in that area, filling in information about the pictures on the walls, and answering other questions. He was dressed smartly in a red coat and black pants, as were all the other waiters. They were all very attentive to their respective tables, and it was a friendly atmosphere, though still efficient. He freely handed out postcards showing the interior of the dining area on the picture side of the card, which I thought was a nice touch.
For our first course, my daughter chose Maryland crab cakes, which she remarked were excellent. Then she had a spring salad with corn and tomatoes…good also. I ordered my favorite tomato and fresh mozzarella salad with yellow peppers and a basil-infused olive oil dressing, for an interesting touch. It was good! Then came the chicken au gratin with mashed potatoes and asparagus…….really good comfort food!
We did force down some dessert after all this, not wanting to miss out on anything. My daughter’s apple pie alamode was ok, but the crust left a lot to be desired. It was not flaky at all, but instead a solid sheet of dough…..not what she was used to having, so that was disappointing. But I ordered Sardi’s special meringue with strawberries and whipped cream and just the right amount of chocolate so as not to be overpowering. It was delicious!
Since we couldn’t see the whole restaurant from where we were sitting, we took turns exiting to the ladies room so we could get a better feel for what the whole experience was like, and to see if we recognized any of the characatures in other parts of the restaurant. Pictures were on the walls of the bar as well as all the way up the stairs to the restrooms, so we were glad we had explored.
One little note here is that a woman was stationed in the ladies room, handing out towels and expecting a tip in return, so be prepared, if you go. Of course you could always drip-dry your hands instead.
All in all, we thought the experience of eating at Sardi’s was worth it. The staff was politely friendly and efficient, and the food was very good. Total price, including a glass of wine apiece and the above-mentioned food courses was $88.85
