A Hair Dryer To Avoid!
Written: Aug 9, 2011
Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
Pros:Fold up handle, retractable cord
Cons:Two of these failed within weeks of purchase. I do not recommend this model.
The Bottom Line: Nice features, but two have failed so this model is very unreliable.
My daughter has had two of these hairdryers, (I have used both of them), and both have failed us miserably. Epinion's lists this as a Sassoon Hair Dryer, but the picture and the shopping link correctly depict it as a Revlon product.
It is powerful and not too noisy, with 1875 watts. You can push a button and the cord is supposed to retract into the fold up handle, making a nice small footprint if you leave your hair dryer on your bathroom counter top. The fact that it folds up also means it is easier to pack into a suitcase, although it is not as small as a true portable hair dryer.
The product has 3 heat and 2 speed settings, but the buttons are flat and lay along the sides of the handle, and they are difficult to move from one setting to another.
It comes with a large round diffuser and a smaller attachment (airflow concentrator) that directs the heat in a concentrated, smaller area. Both of these work okay, but we generally used the product without these attachments.
According to Revlon, "Tourmaline Ionic Technology provides for faster drying with shinier healthier-looking results, while ceramic technology allows for even heat distribution to prevent damaging hot spots".
The first hair dryer my daughter owned was new in the box and I used it when I spent two months with her when my granddaughter was born. After just a few weeks the cord failed to retract into the handle, so we returned it to our local Target store, where it was purchased, with no problems.
For some unknown reason, my daughter purchased a second of these hair dryers to bring to Alaska with her. Her husband was being deployed and she and the baby came to live at home for six months. She didn't use the hair dryer for more than a month and it stopped working. It would blow only cold air! We tried again to return it to Target, but because the receipt and packaging were back in Louisiana the store would not help us.
I contacted Revlon, who gave me the toll free phone number for a company called Helen of Troy. They said they would replace the product if we mailed it back to them. They also said they would refund our shipping costs if we requested it in writing. A new hair dryer is supposed to be mailed to us within 7 days of their receiving it. We don't really want a third model like this, the first two have shown to be unreliable.
The hair dryer looks nice, it is fairly quiet and it has some nice features. However, two of them have failed within weeks of purchase, and even if they still worked I hate the speed and heat setting controls on the handle, they are very hard to move from one setting to the next.
I wish I could give this hair dryer zero stars, but I will have to be satisfied with one.
