Wayne is 2 ½ years old now and has not had a bottle of any type since his first birthday. But I heard of HawgWyld’s write-off and I had to go through everything I owned to see what I could write about and there up in my attic in a box with the old bottles sat the Sassy Baby Food Nurser and I thought back to what a pain it was and lo and behold! I found my write off subject. Now I must warn you, I am not going to trash this product completely because it does have some good points to it. Read on for information!
About the Sassy Baby Food Nurser
The sassy nurser comes 2 to a pack. You have your larger 4 oz. and the smaller 2 oz. Also called the traveler. They come in a variety of colors. We have the green set but there is also yellow, blue, white, purple and red. Both bottles are made to hold baby foods and cereals but the smaller bottle is made to hold lesser amounts for traveling. To use the Sassy nurser you open the top of the “bottle” pour in the baby food or cereal and place the lid back on. These are microwave able but never ever put one in the microwave with the nipple on and always check the temperature of the food with your skin to make sure that you are not going to burn your little one. Each bottle has a small white plastic disc at the bottom of the bottle that lifts up and pushed the food toward your baby while they are sucking. These disks are removable and the bottle is easily washed and sanitized. They are also dishwasher safe and even if hand washed I would recommend a run through the dishwasher so that the hot water can sterilize all your bottles and nurser’s. Each nurser is octagon in shape and come with a variety of prints on them from fish, teddy bears and stars and moons.
Let’s talk about the cons of this nurser
There are a lot of cons to this nurser in my opinion and I was not pleased with it at all.
First of all let me state that this nurser is NOT intended for children under 6 months of age. You should not give any kind of solid foods to a child under 6months unless there is a medical condition that requires it. I hear a lot of people talk bad about this nurser because parents are using it on babies under the recommended age but this nurser is not meant for them and if you know of someone who is using it on a small infant with no medical reason then please talk with them and let them know that they should not feed their under 6 month old solids. I purchased this nurser after Wayne lost 5 lbs from having the flu when he was 7 months old. He was so weak and he really needed to eat so I purchased the nurser hoping that he would take it more easily. I used rice cereal in it and was instantly not pleased. First off, the nipple has four holes in it to make the food more easily accessible when your little one sucks; this can be a bad thing because it causes the nurser to leak badly. The disc in the bottom of the nurse kept jamming and I had to continually use my thumb on the bottom of the nurser to keep food pushing upwards so that Wayne could get enough to eat. Also those little white plastic tops that they call lids are worthless. They will not stay on in any shape form or fashion so make sure that if you do need to use one of these nurser’s that you do not put one in your diaper bag because food will get every where. As I have said before, the sassy nurser’s can be put in the microwave but I would not do it for more than 5 seconds at a time. You can also place these in warm water to heat the food but water will seep into the bottle and make your food runny and watery. The nurser’s are a very odd shape and are not useable for most bottle warmers.
Let’s talk about the Pro’s of this nurser
Contrary to popular belief, there are some pro’s to this nurser. This nurser did feed Wayne ok even though it took some getting used to. We used it for 3 days until Wayne had enough strength to go back to spoon feedings. I would not have used this nurser at all if Wayne had not gotten sick and would have preferred him to stay on the spoon feedings but you do what you can with a sick little one. A while back I had a child in my care that had Down syndrome. He was 7 months old when he left my care and was considerably far behind in milestones compared to other children. His pediatrician did suggest using a nurser on him because he was not getting enough nourishment with just formula but he was unable to actually eat with a spoon. Andy was placed on the nurser at 6 months old and his grandparents told me that he stayed on the nurser till he was 13 months old and could take spoon feedings. In this case the nurser actually worked great and kept Andy off of feeding tubes which would not have been a good thing for any little one to go through. About the only good recommendation I can give on this nurser is if you have a very sick child or a child with Down Syndrome or any other medical problem, this nurser could be right for you.
Standard Warnings and Observations
I cannot state this enough, do NOT use this nurser on any child under the age of 6 months unless you have a medical reason. This nurser is made to help the transition between bottle and spoon smoother and is not intended to be an easy way to feed your child all the time. Whenever using this nurser, never lay your child down; always keep them in an upright position to avoid choking. The AAP (American Academy of Pediatrics) does not approve of this product and does not endorse it in any way. It is best to pre-heat food before putting it in the nurser but you can use this product with out the nipple in the microwave for very short periods of time.
