While cleaning out all the now neglected baby toys out of the toy box earlier today, I happened to wander upon Katie’s old Sassy Busy Bead Bird. I remember buying this little toy on a particular Target shopping spree where it was my goal to come home with anything and everything that might keep my teething baby happy! He was a cute little bird and looked like he had a lot of potential, and I thought he was just adorable. Actually, I had a little trouble saying no to anything that was Sassy.
I came home, opened up all our new little treasures in front of Katie, and waited for her to pick a favorite. I was just sure it would be the Busy Bead Bird. Well, it wasn’t. I think she wound up chewing on the cardboard packages that day. Finally, within a couple of weeks, she began to appreciate the cute qualities of the Busy Bead Bird.
So, what’s so cool about the Sassy Busy Bead Bird?
For teething babies, the Busy Bead Bird offer a plethora of chewing surfaces and textures. At the top of his head out sprouts several little ribbon like feathers. They are yellow and purple, kind of rough feeling, and were always wet! Katie just loved sucking on these little things. They are very securely attached to his head – even Katie hasn’t been able to tear one out. And ours are kind of stiff now, from being sucked on so must ending a little over a year ago.
Moving down from Busy’s feathers, is his head. It’s made of a hard smooth plastic and is purple. He was big red cheeks, and yellow beak and black and white eyes. He’s a happy looking little fellow.
Busy’s neck is probably the neatest part to him. It’s basically a clear plastic tube with an orange, spiky, twisted, ladder looking thingie inside (how is that for a technical description?). His neck is also filled with red, blue, yellow, and orange littler beads, that make the coolest swooshing - swishing sound when Busy is turned over and over and over again. This sound gets to be sort of hypnotizing when you hear it a million times while you are driving down the road, so be careful! When Katie figured out how to turn him over and back again, she was hooked!
Down at Busy’s body we find two lavender colored winds. They are made of a softer plastic that the rest of Busy, but are still rigid. They are covered with lots of little bumps that make sore baby gums so happy! This was probably the second slobberiest part of our Busy, after his feathers. Between his wings, his body is made of the same hard plastic as his head. The top part of his body is purple, the bottom is orange, and two cute green feet peek out underneath.
So, that’s it for the aesthetics of Busy Bead Bird. He’s a really cute little guy, and Katie loved him. But I have to say that I was really disappointed in him as compared to other Sassy toy. His main problem is that the red paint that makes his cheeks began to chip and peel after a couple of months. Fortunately, his cheeks and eyes are the only colored parts of him that seem to be painted one. The other colors seem to be imbedded within the plastic. I’m sure the paint isn’t toxic or anything, but I still didn’t like the idea of paint chips in my little Katie’s tummy. I noticed this the first time when I saw flecks of red around her mouth one day. I still let her play with him, but I didn’t’ pack him in the diaper bag as a habit.
So, do I recommend Busy Bead Bird? Hum, that’s a tough one. Katie really did enjoy him, but not as much as I would have hoped. And that paint thing really irritates me. I know it’s not going to hurt her, but I paid good money for what I thought was a really cool little teething toy. And I don’t think the paint should chip off like that! It’s way too late to return Busy, and mom’s just don’t have the time to worry about things like this! So, while I highly recommend all the other Sassy toys we’ve been through, I would just have to say, “Buyer Beware” to the Busy Bead Bird.
