Pros:Crisp, refreshing flavor, lemon flavor compliments the beer and doesn't overpower
Cons:"Macho" types may not want to admit they like it
I first tasted Saxer Lemon Lager at a small brewer's tasting festival about 4 years ago. It was a very hot day at the event, held annually in Mountain View, CA. The brewers' stands were located under one "big top" tent - and it was humid inside! It was just the ideal situation for hundreds of people interested in downing samples of cold, frothy beer!

A group of friends and I took over a picnic table, gathered our glasses and tokens (6 oz. of beer was exchanged per token) and set out for an afternoon of sampling. We quenched our thirst with great - and not so great - beer from small breweries, we shared "best tastes" secrets - like which brewers poured more than the allotted 6 oz. Then, I found the keeper from the show - Saxer Lemon Lager.
I was a bit skeptical at first - lemon beer? I am a fan of the raspberry wheat beers out there, but this seemed like an odd combination. What the heck - it was hot under the big top and I was anxious to sample new recipes.
Saxer Lemon Lager is a very tasty and easy-drinking beer! I was very surprised how crisply the lager-y hoppy flavor combines with a slight hint of tart lemon. It is light in color with a lemon flavor present both at first sip and during the pleasant aftertaste. The lemon flavor tastes more "real" than artificial; it is light and not overpowering and adds a refreshing compliment to the light hoppy taste. I loved it!
I returned to my table of friends singing the praises of my findings. Only the group - many of whom were men and wouldn't actually say they enjoyed "fruity girl beers" (their words)- were very skeptical and reluctant to even taste the Lemon Lager. One by one, with noses wrinkled, they each tried a sip - and liked it too! The brewer at the Saxer table received a lot of business from our group that day - not only did we enjoy the Lemon Lager, but there were a few others that found favor among the group. We talked the brewer's ear off - in return, we learned where the beer can be purchased and also received Saxer keychains and bottle openers. From our group's perspective, Saxer Lemon Lager was one of the hits of the festival!
Since then, I've drunk Lemon Lager many times - on warm days on the sailboat in the Bay, at outdoor BBQs and picnics. I've even brought a six-pack to a friend present at the "discovery" in Mountain View who has since relocated to NYC.
It's a great beer to have on warm/hot sunny days and I think it goes well with nearly any type of food usually consumed on the same - burgers, grilled chicken, potato salad, corn on the cob, etc.
In the SF Bay Area, Saxer Lemon Lager can be found in Beverages & More stores. The brewery's website (www.saxerbeer.com) gives more information about the beers brewed by Saxer, but, unfortunately, doesn't give information about retail sales locations.
