Scattergories, created by Hasbro, is a fun and creative game to which no other compares. I received this game as a Christmas present several years ago, and to this day it remains my favorite board game.
~~~Whats Included~~~
Timer
20 Sided Die
6 Mini Pencils
2 Answer Sheet Pads
6 Answer-Hider Boards
6 Copies of 12 different Lists
~~~Setup~~~
This is an every player for themselves game, so each player gets their own answer-hider board, pencil, answer sheet, and list. The die and timer are set in the middle.
~~~How To Play~~~
Everyone decided upon a list, either playing in order from List 1 to List 12, or pick randomly. Each list contains 12 topics, ranging from very specific things such as Presidents, to vague things like Reasons for being late. So, one person rolls the die, and sets the timer, and the round begins. The letter the die lands on is the letter all of your answers must begin with. Now, if your answer is a person, either theyre last name or first may start with the chosen letter. The object is to get as many of the 12 topics as possible within the time limit, and be as creative as possible.
At the end of the allotted time, everyone shares their answers. If someone else has the same answer as you, neither of you get any points. But, say you roll and H, and one of your 12 topics is Games, and you answer Hungry, Hungry, Hippos, you get 3 points. You cannot repeat the same answer for different topics in the same round. After 3 rounds (different letters, but the same list), you tally up all of your points and the one with the most wins.
~~~What Not To Do~~~
The first time my mother-in-law played Scattergories, the first of 12 topics was Breakfast Foods, and we rolled a difficult letter, F, I think. When it came time to share answers, we discovered that she had tried to think of 12 different foods that begin with F! 1 answer for each of the 12 topics, please!!
~~~Gameplay Variations
While you can include literate children in this game, its much funner when its adults only. My recommendation is to add vodka, roll the die, and think as dirty as possible. The more wild and wacky your answers are, the more fun youll have. For instance, Ice cubes on nipples for Things That Are Cold. Vibrator, for Toys. Sex, for Household Chores. Boyfriends, for Things You Replace. Herpes, for Something You Keep Hidden
you get the point.
~~~Assembly~~~
The Answer-hider boards (for lack of a more technical term) is a cardboard square that you fold in half, and place a plastic thingy in the grooves of the cardboard folds, that you place you answer sheet and list in to hold in place. This can be tricky, but thankfully you only have to do this the first time you play the game. Most likely adult help will be required, but come on, its not Mousetrap, or anything like that!
~~~A Few Of My Favorite Topics~~~
Things That Are Sticky (hehe)
Bad Habits
Things You Shout
Crimes
Things That Jump/Bounce (hehe)
Things That Have Spots( EWWW)
4 Letter Words
World Records
Nicknames
Plus, after youve used all 12 lists a million times, you can always come up with your own topics.
~~~Recommended For:~~~
This game is recommended for both children (of reading and writing age), and adults as well. 2 people can play, and the max the game provides for is 6, but you can always share lists, and more people can play. The more, the merrier! Enjoy, everyone.
