| mommyknowsbest's Full Review: Scattergories |
I recently did some "Spring" cleaning and found this game I have had for many years that somehow became lost in the back of my closet...Scattergories! What a wonderful surprise, I thought that the game had been thrown away or just plain disappeared and was thrilled to see it again. What a hit it was for our family when I pulled it out for family game night!
Keep in mind that this is a game that we purchased ten years ago, it takes no batteries, so the big question was whether my kids would enjoy it as much as I did.
As we gathered around the table and I explained the game they seemed kinda bored and I began to worry. The basics of the game are that each player get a pad with three columns number 1 through twelve in a in a "folder" or types. Behind the pad is a stack of cards with your categories on them. Each card has enough for 4 rounds. There is a large die with letters on it that is rolled and you have to think of an answer for each category that begins with whatever it lands on before the timer runs out. Sounds pretty easy right?
Well let me tell you when that timer is ticking away and you can't think of a cartoon character that begins with "K" it really gets you going! Once the timer buzzes you go around reading your answers, if another player has put the same as you then it gets marked out. Then you add up your unique and qualified answers for that round and that is your score. A game lasts 3 rounds.
By qualified answers I mean answers that the groups doesn't object to. When pressed people can and will put down some really silly things. Thats where the laughs come in.
I loved planning this with my family. My husband loved it. My oldest daughter who is twelve enjoyed it but really had to work for some of her answers. My youngest daughter who is six couldn't think of an answer for all of them but the funny thing is that she always thought of an answer for the ones we were stumped on. I think it helped her with her spelling and was a great mind exercise for her.
We had a wonderful time and this a game that I am sure will never get pushed to the back of the closet again. It was like finding a treasure chest filled with fun and to be honest we haven't laughed as much as we did last night in a long time. I definately recommend this game to families as long as the child can read they will have lots of fun with this one!
My kids have already decided this is the game they want to play next week for game night! I have a feeling it will be for sometime!
