Scattergories is a fun, fast paced game that everyone seems to enjoy that has played it with me. It is definitely best played with kids that are old enough to read and write at the fast pace, but otherwise, is for everyone!
I had the opportunity recently to play the game at a women's meeting. It was my job to "host" the game and get the group playing within a certain time slot. I'm happy to say that the ladies, all of whom had not played before, caught on really quickly and we all had a good time.
The game really is simple with only a few components: A large letter die, a board to role the letter die on, the timer, pencils, papers, and the holders for the paper, and category cards 1-12
The premise is simple: You have category cards, you get the first card (marked #1) with 10 categories on it and set the timer up. Then you roll the die to see which letter you have and off you go. The idea is to have different answers than anyone else or you don't get points. For example if the category said: A Man's Name and the letter was D, you could put Don, but if anyone else has it, it does not count for either of you. The idea is to get a little creative with your answers to make them unique.
After each of the players reads their answers, you tally up the points for that first round. Then, you leave the #1 category card in and roll the die again to have a different letter. That's right, same category, different letter. Once you do that letter, you tally up the points for that round and then roll the die again and do the same categories with another letter. You do 3 rounds with the same categories, a different letter each time. Then tally up the points from the third round and then tally up all 3 rounds to find the winner of that category.
You can stop there, but you'll be having so much fun you won't want to stop. If you don't want to stop, there are 12 other category cards that you can just play as long as you want, or until you come to category card #12. However, the great thing about it is, even when you come back to the first card, you may get 3 totally different letters and it's a brand new game again! They have new category cards that you can purchase if you get tired of using the same categories.
This game is a lot of fun, very easy to learn and very simple to set up and start playing without a lot of fuss. You won't be sorry that you pick up this game. It's a lot of fun for the whole family!
