| Ready2bmom's Full Review: Scattergories |
I love Scattergories, but it almost makes me think too hard.
First, let me tell you what it comes with, and then I’ll tell you what to do with it. Get your mind out of the gutters!
Scattergories comes with a cardboard placemat so that your table doesn’t get scratched. A dice that has the 26 letters of the alphabet, a timer, pencils to write your answers down, 36 category cards,6 folders, and 2 answer pads. Each answer sheet has 3 lists (3 rounds) and each list has 12 answers. The answer sheets are double-sided so as not to waste paper.
You play with 2 to 6 players. The more players there are, the more crazier and more fun it gets to be. The age is from age 12 and up.
The object of the game is to score the most points from writing down as many answers as possible for the letter that was rolled. It’s played in 3 rounds and the end the you total up all the answers that were accepted and see who wins.
Okay, now here is what you’ve been waiting for. What you do with all that stuff. Everyone takes a folder with an answering pad and one set of category cards. On each category card is a list of different things that you have to write down that begin with the letter rolled on the dice. The players take turns deciding on which list to use for each round.
Once a list is decided on, someone rolls the dice and then begins the timer. In that time you write down an answer for each item on the list beginning with the same letter. After the timer goes off, each player reads off their answers one by one. Then the other players get to vote!
All players have three minutes to think up answers for 12 questions. What's really great is that if you have a player that thinks he knows it all, you can shorten the time. There are 3 different settings for the time under three minutes.
Sounds easy enough, right? Not!
You have to be original. If two people have the same answer, you don’t get points for your answer. For example if the question is name a restaurant, and you put Bilotti’s, and Mary Jo puts Bilotti’s, you both get 0 for that answer. If you put an answer down that has two words that begin with that letter on the dice, you can get 2 points for it. The catch to scoring is to make the other players believe that your answer is an actual person, or object. If your answer is Bilotti’s, you have to convince the other players that that is an actual place to eat. If the players believe you are lying, they can vote that you don’t get points for that answer. Some people are better than others at convincing. Sometimes, that may be the whole key to winning; acting like you actually know a place called The!
If you are a highly imaginative person and have many ideas, you will no doubt enjoy this game. Unfortunately, there are people, like me, who have no imagination and this game does prove to be difficult for me at times.
Here's an example: I pick the letter H. I decide on list 9. I start the timer. My first answer is restaurant. I think of Hops. My second answer is notorious people. I can answer Hitler. And so on.
How the scoring goes: You get one point for every answer that everyone agrees on. You can get two points if your answer is Farrah Fawcett because you used 2 F's at the beginning of each word. At the end of three rounds, whoever has the most points wins.
Try it out. You never know! See if you're as "scatter-brained" as I am!
