| b-bear2005's Full Review: Scattergories |
I first played this game at one of my friend's houses. After 1 round, I was hooked! But enough of my personal story. I'll give you some basic facts about the game so that you can make an educated decision on whether its a purchase you would like to make.
What will I get if I purchase Scattergories?
Scattergories comes in a nice, small square red box that fits all the parts well. I appreciate it's size because it allows for easy storage. It's about 10 1/2 inches wide by 3 1/2 inches deep. Inside the box are 6 playing folders, which hold each player's writing pads and list, 36 catergory cards, 2 pads with answer sheets, 6 small pencils, a 20 - sided die containing letters of the alphabet, 6 plastic strips you will need to insert into each of the playing folders, which will clip your writing pads and list in place, a timer, and a cardboard pad for you to roll the heavy die on, which also contains the instructions on the back.
What is the object of the game?
The object of Scattergories is to fill out your list with an approiate letter answer in each category. For example, each list contains twelve catergories. Before each round, one player rolls the die on cardboard, and the letter on top is what each answer on your list must start with. But time is limited, so work fast!!! You also must be creative with your answers, because if any other player has the same one, neither of you will get any points. At the end of three rounds, the player with the most points wins. But you don't have to play in 3 rounds - I love to play more!!!
What constitutes an acceptable answer on my list?
The first letter of your answer must begin with the letter rolled on the die.
Articles ("a", "an", and "the") cannot be used for the key letters. So if you needed a movie title for the letter T, and you put the movie "The Green Mile", that will not count because "the" is an article. However, if you needed a movie title for G, "The Green Mile" would be acceptable.
You cannot use the same word twice in one round. So, if you decide to use the same word for a flower, and a girl's name, you will not be allowed to use both.
If you decide to answer with a proper name, you have more leeway. You can write the name using the last name first, then a comma and the first name, or first names could be used as well.
If another player challenges your answer, the players must all vote on whether to accept or not, and majority wins. In case of a tie, the answer does not count.
Other Information:
To score your game, add all your points from each round together. The person with the highest total wins. If there is a tie, those two players play one more round, and the winner from that round wins the game.
If you run out of answer pads, you may purchase more by sending a check or money order of $5.00 including shipping and handling, to the address you will find listed on the instruction board.
I hope my review has helped you make a decision about your game purchase!!! : )
