A few months ago I first read an Andera Kane book. I really enjoyed the book and I got another one of her books soon after that. I recently took advantage of a special at the book and I got several books to add to my ever growing pile of books to read. Scent of Danger by Andera Kane was one of those books. I really enjoyed the book.

Carson Brooks was working late. He’d started his own perfume company that became successful. The newest scent, C’est Moi, was very popular and selling like mad. Dylan Newport, the attorney for Carson’s company, was also working late. He’d gone to his office to get some papers. When he returned, he found Carson near death. He’d been shot in the back. Dylan quickly got help. On the way to the hospital, Carson spoke briefly to Dylan. There was a chance that Carson had a child. He wanted Dylan to find out for sure.

Carson survived but he was in serious condition. The bullet caused some damage to his kidneys. There was a chance that he would need a transplant. Dylan was determined to find out if Carson had a child and find the child if there was one. Carson had been thinking of trying to find out if he did have a child for a while. The shooting just made it more important to him.

Dylan met with the private detective and learned that Carson had a daughter named Sabrina Radcliffe. She owned her own management consultant company. Dylan immediately went to see Sabrina. She knew the circumstances surrounding her birth, but not who her father was. After talking to her mother Gloria, Sabrina decided to go to New York to see Carson. She wanted to meet him, but she wouldn’t commit to going through all the necessary testing to see if she was a compatible donor. There was a connection between her and Carson when they met.

Sabrina decided that she wanted to get to know Carson. She also decided to go through the testing. Carson put her in charge of his company. She continued to run her own company as well. She and Dylan spent a lot of time together and became involved. The police were investigating the shooting, but they weren’t making much progress. They suspected everyone, including Gloria. Other people turned up dead and the deaths seemed to be connected to Carson’s shooting. Attempts were made to kill Sabrina and Dylan.

Scent of Danger was published in 2003. It is available as a paperback and an audio book. I found this book, and others by Andera Kane, in the romance section of the local bookstore.

Scent of Danger was an entertaining book. It grabbed my attention right from the beginning. The book was descriptive and well written. I couldn’t put it down once I started reading it. I didn’t think the book was predictable at all.

The investigation into who shot Carson was the mystery in Scent of Danger. That was the main focus of the book. Different aspects of the investigation were featured. Some other people were killed, and those things had to be investigated as well. There were suspenseful moments at different times in the book. Perfume making was important to the plot. Carson was good at designing scents, and one of his talents in that area ended up being very important. There was some violence at times as well, but it wasn’t a violent book overall. I don’t think it was violent enough to offend anyone.

Sabrina and Dylan met near the beginning of Scent of Danger. They became involved later in the book. Carson had a girlfriend, but there wasn’t too much romance shown between them. All their time together in the book was spent in his hospital room. There were some sexual situations and acts between Sabrina and Dylan in the book. The scenes were descriptive, so some people could be offended. There were also some discussions of the events leading up to Sabrina’s birth. Her conception was a bit unusual, especially for that time, but it isn’t so shocking now. Some people could have a problem with it though.

Sabrina and Dylan were the main characters in Scent of Danger. They were also the most developed characters. Both of them seemed to be well-rounded characters. Carson turned up fairly often, but he was mainly only shown in the hospital. He wasn’t as developed, but it wasn’t flat either. There were two detectives investigating the shooting. They were only shown interviewing suspects or at the police station. They were flat characters. Gloria only popped up a few times, so she wasn’t developed much at all.

CHARACTERS

Dylan Newport - He was the attorney for Carson’s company. He and Carson were very close. Dylan was determined to find out if Carson had a child. Once he found out that Carson had a daughter, Dylan was focused on getting her to come to New York and agree to go through the testing, and possibly even a transplant. Dylan was very loyal to Carson. Dylan was also protective of Sabrina at times. He had some trouble in his past, but he turned his life around with help from Carson.

Sabrina Radcliffe - She was a successful business owner. She was surprised to discover who her father was. She was hesitant to get involved. She was very close to her mother, and did know how she was conceived. She just hadn’t known who her father was. Once she made up her mind to do something, she stuck with it. Should could be stubborn at times. She was good at her job and did a good job when working at Carson’s company.

Carson Brooks - He was the owner of a very successful perfume company. He’d worked hard and built up the business himself. He created C’est Moi himself and that perfume was very popular. He’d devoted his life to his business and never married. He was glad to meet Sabrina and thrilled about her working in the company. He became protective of her in a hurry. He wanted to see her and Dylan get involved and he did a bit of matchmaking to try to make sure that happened.

Gloria Radcliffe - Sabrina’s mother. Gloria was a successful designer. She came from a wealthy, high society family. She’d never married. She decided that she wanted a child but she didn’t want to marry someone she didn’t love. She came up with a different solution that scandalized her parents. She did things to protect her daughter. She was proud of her daughter, and supportive the decisions she made.

I enjoyed Scent of Danger. It was an entertaining book. People who have enjoyed other books by Andera Kane may also like this one.
