Wheat beers could be described as the champagne of the beer world (or at least the fizzy white wine). They can be clear or cloudy, dark or pale, or any combination thereof. As a thirst quencher they are probably at their most popular in the summer.
Most wheat beers are ales, this just means that they are top fermented, and are brewed with around 40-60% wheat, either malted or unmalted. The wheat gives a soft and grainy taste and should makes for an impressive head.
It's summer, so what better time to drink one.
THE SCHNEIDER BREWERY dates back to 1872 when Georg Schneider was granted the right to brew wheat beer by King Ludwig II. Up until then wheat beer could only be brewed by royalty in a Weisse Brauhaus (wheat beer brewpub).

Which reminds me...
A middle-aged man out jogging noticed a tennis ball lying by the side of the path. Being fairly new and in good condition, he picked the ball up, put it in his pocket and headed on.
Waiting at the crossing for the light to change, he noticed a beautiful blonde standing next to him smiling.
"What do you have in your pocket?", she asked.
"Tennis ball," the man said, smiling.
"Wow," said the blonde looking upset. "That must hurt. I once had tennis elbow and the pain was unbearable!"
Back to the beer.....
Pour with care, it's extremely effervescent and if you're not careful you'll be wearing this instead of drinking it.
It's a sandy, amber, tan colour - it's actually quite dark for a wheat beer - and has a yeasty cloudiness with a thick, foamy, solid and long-lasting head but not a great deal of lace. There's a heady aroma of cloves, nutmeg, apple and banana with a hint of vanilla adding to the complexity. Yeasty, but not quite having the bready smell of some Belgian wheat beers.
It's light bodied and creamy in texture with a somewhat chewy mouthfeel. Slightly acidic, there's a little vanilla taste but the predominant flavours are fruity. Bananas, apples, tangerines and pears, this beer is a fruit salad! The yeast adds a clove like spicy taste. There's a thick, rich wheat flavour but it's less citrusy than most wheat beers. Slightly sweet with hardly any bitterness, the hops might preserve the beer but they add almost no bitterness.
It's very fruity with the banana and clove flavours lingering to the slightly sweet and malty finish.
* The Verdict *
At 5.4% ABV, this is a refreshing and thirst quenching brew. It costs around £1.79 ($2.70) for a 500ml bottle in my local Safeways.
It's not my favourite wheat beer but it is certainly a beer of quality. I don't have any problems with the flavour of this beer, it's delicious. No, it's the look of it. As I said it is darker than most wheat beers and it's very cloudy - no problem there. It's the colour. It's a personal thing but it looks to me like dirty, muddy puddle water. It's just not attractive.
** TIP - Close your eyes or drink it in the dark.
Speaking of colour...what's grey and comes in gallons?
