| Freak369's Full Review: Scooby Doo Cakes Mini Treats Pan |
Theme parties are a blast to plan but there are times when you will want to pull your air out and question why you went with a certain character. As far as Scooby-Doo goes, there's no shortage of products that you can get for kids of all ages, I only wish I had this pan when I did the Scooby Doo-rific party a few years ago. This is a mini cake pan so your end result edible will be a lot smaller than a standard round or half sheet cake. They're about three inches wide, five inches high and a shade under an inch high. This is a must-have pan if you are going to have kids with allergies at a party; you can make them something special so they don't feel left out. Scooby Doo Cakes Mini Treats Pan 2105-3228 The first thing you'll notice about this pan is the cool teal metallic color but don’t get too attached to it, after about six months of use it will start to dull. It doesn't change anything about the pan or how it works but it won't look as good as when you take it out of the shrink wrap. It comes with a decorating sheet so make sure that you keep that; you can go with any colors you want but the sheet does make it easier to get the authentic Scooby look to it. This isn't a pan that I would suggest for beginners in cake decorating because of the size of the cake; you're going to need to have some steady hands and four different tips to apply the icing to it so if you have high hopes of whipping up a ton of these and having them look just like the picture, make sure you start making them at least two or three days in advance and store them in a plastic, air tight container. If you are going to use an angel food mix I'd wait until the last possible minute to make them so they don't dry out or get hard edges. From a single boxed cake mix you can get eight to ten Scooby cakes but don't carve that in stone just yet. It all depends on how much you fill them, don't go over three quarters of the cavity or you will end up with humps on the bottom and you'll have to trim them to get them to lay flat for decorating. That’s not hard to do but you can end up with a lot of crumbs that will get into the icing or frosting no matter how careful you are. You can check the Wilton website for tips and tricks on decorating this to make it look like the picture or some short cuts you can take to get the job done quicker but still end up with something that looks good. Wilton Color Mist is another great product to look into using on cakes like this; you can add color without having to spend five to ten minutes per cake with icing or frosting. Visually the mini cakes come out looking just like a Scooby head but you do need to make sure that the inside of the cavity is well greased and floured or that you apply a cake release evenly. Get even one small section that sticks and you will be scrapping the cake. I let them cool at least a half hour to keep the icing or frosting from breaking down or getting too soft. If you are shot on tie you can pop them in the refrigerator for a few minutes but don't do that as soon as you take them out of the oven or they will be rock hard. There are four Scooby heads per pan so if you are going to try to make one for each person attending you are in for a day of baking and decorating. One of the easiest ways to decorate this is to frost it one color then use candy like licorice, mini M&M's, colored coconut and jelly beans to add color. The Color Mist idea works well if you are using a light colored cake mix but for chocolate you might want to try putting the cakes on a cooling rack then apply a coating of royal icing. I don't want to discourage people who are just starting out with cake decorating from getting this pan but I'd rather have you know what you are getting yourself into than to get frustrated and throw the pan out the back door. One of the nicest things about this pan is the price; when I found it, it was on sale for four dollars at my local Michaels. The packaging was a little beat up but otherwise the pan was in perfect shape. When it was sold at the Wilton Online Store it was $5.99 which isn't bad for a character pan. This can still be found in retail stores as well as some online sites that sell baking pans but there are several Scooby-Doo pans from Wilton so you need to make sure that you are ordering the correct pan or you could end up with something completely different. What's "The Party Works" connection? Thy are one of the sites that had this baking pan listed for sale and were sniffed out by a search engine. Rest assured, they are not the makers of the pan, just an online retailer that at one point in time sold it. This is a great pan to have for any Scooby themed party but think outside the cake box, use it for making brownies, ice cream molds or the previously mentioned angel food cake. You can top off the Scooby Angel Cakes with some fresh cut strawberries and whopped cream and have a home made dessert in just a couple minutes. You can freeze the angel food cakes so if you want to make a few batches and freeze them to use whenever the mood strikes, you certainly can. ================== ^V^ © 2009 Freak369 ^V^ ================== Scooby-Doo Party Toppers Scooby-Doo Party Bags Scooby-Doo Shaped Sprinkles Scooby-Doo Icing Decorations Scooby-Doo Cake Decoration Kit A Scooby Doo-rific Birthday!
