Cartoon Network and Hanna-Barbera have done it again – created another board game that is not only fun – but cultivates learning skills as well. I came across this board game while stocking up on Christmas presents for three families we adopted in our local “Adopt-A-Family” program. There are several small children that needed gifts – and after my kids test-drove a game I really felt the need to review it.
The Scooby Doo Get That Dog Game is suggested for kids between the ages of 3 to 6; but my boys proved it wrong (again). My first thought was they would lose interest with it in about ten minutes – wrong. After an hour they started making up their own rules and before long they created a whole new game. I mean – for a board game that was only $3.99 – they played with it more than some of the higher ticket items in the playroom. What really got me was that all four of them played together – no fighting over pieces – no arguing over the rules and best of all – their imagination was in overdrive. Anytime I can find some game or toy that allows them to use their imagination and be creative I turn into one of those “sloppy moms” – you know – getting the camcorder and camera – standing in the hallway secretly capturing moments of my kids life to later embarrass them with.
The game is simple – lay all the pieces face down and try to match them up. The game suggests laying them face down in six rows, with eight cards in each row. You take turns flipping cards over and when you get a match you keep the cards – at the end of the game who ever has the most cards wins. There are special Scooby Doo cards that allow you to take the Scooby figure from whom ever has it when you draw the card – but the little rule was overlooked when the youngest of my brood claimed the figure for his collection. There are monster cards that take away a pair you have matched. There are wild cards as well – pick one of these with any other card and you get an instant match. Most of the time the boys have elected to just use the monster cards and wild cards as standard matches.
The boys came up with several variations of the game; one is to try to get all of the Scooby and Shaggy cards. Two weeks after the initial purchase it still gets played with at least three to four times a week – how many other games can boast that type of replay value? Another game was to pick one of the game pieces and designate it as a wild card. You have to collect pieces that are alike and create “a hand” with them – while my son was explaining this to me I saw my brother Angus sneaking out of the playroom – seems Uncle Angus has been teaching the boys to play “Scooby Poker”. I’m not sure if I agree with it but my brother argues it is just harmless fun.
The game cards are relatively sturdy and are printed on compressed cardboard – younger kids who are teething might really like digging into these pieces so you might want to keep them away from them. The game cards are very colorful and keep with the theme of the television cartoon. The Scooby Doo figure is pretty heavy – extremely detailed and about two and a half inches tall. Like I said – the youngest scooped this up for his collection right away.
There really is no limit to the variations of the game. Get creative with it and you’ll see your kid’s eyes light up. After all, when you can incorporate fun and learning – you can’t go wrong. I highly recommend this game to kids of all ages – Scooby Doo is a timeless classic that I remember from my childhood.
