trenta200's Full Review: Scosche Industries IPRFDOC Remote Control
Before I start my review I would like you to know that I try not to focus on the features, capabilities, etc. of the object I am reviewing since it can be readily found in other reviews or in the details tab of the object. For example, if I review a printer, I assume that you know whether it has pictbridge capabilities or a card reader, since that is covered in the details tab as well as well as the website of the respective printer. I will tell you, however, if there is something wrong with the feature or if it I have not used it. If I dont mention it that means that it works without problems and does not need mentioning. This does not apply to a product with little or no reviews.
UPDATE: I've lowered this product from three stars to two stars due to the adaptor falling out constantly.
I bought this remote two weeks ago for my fifth generation 30g Ipod. I would have bought a Griffin Airclick but I couldn't find it. I did have an Airclick for my Ipod Mini, so that is what I'll be comparing it to. Also, the one I have is a bit different. The remote has the same functions but is smaller, and the adaptor is much smaller as well, about one third of the size in the picture.
It works:
This is an RF remote, which means you don't have to aim it at the ipod in order for it to work. This does that, as you would assume, but I've heard complaints about some not working at all.
Small:
As I've mentioned, the one I've bought is a newer version and it's quite a bit smaller than the one in the picture. That's usually a good thing, except that the button placement is symmetrical which means that it's hard to figure out which side is up and down, save for a small notch into which you are supposed to put a charm or strap through (not included in set). I can't find any drawbacks in the adaptor because of it's size.
Works with Case:
The adaptor I have works with the case I have, where the bigger one probably wouldn't have. It should work with cases that have a big enough opening on the bottom, although I can't be sure since I have only tested my case.
Features:
This is a pro and a con. This has a few extra features compared to the Airclick. The features are a two extra buttons on the remote, a button for turning shuffle on and off, and a button depicting two pages stacked one upon the other. The shuffle button is useful if you want to turn shuffle on or off. All the other button seems to do is make the indicator light on the remote blink rapidly for two or three seconds. I still can't figure out what it does after two weeks. More features include a passthrough dock connector on the bottom of the remote adaptor, so you can plug it into the charger or fm tuner while using the remote. Also, it comes with cables to plug it into any audio source via the headphone jack. UPDATE: I have found out, after watching the video on the scosche website that this button is used to change playlists, although it doesn't do anything connected to my Ipod, despite having several playlists.
Bad Response:
Although the system works, it doesn't work perfectly. Sometimes it doesn't pick up the button presses occasionally, meaning you have to press twice occasionally, usually about ten times a day.
Adaptor pops out:
The adaptor doesn't snap into the dock like the charger, which means it can fall out if you shake it enough. It's only happened to me three or four times in the two weeks that I've had it, but it's kind of a pain taking it out of your backpack to reinsert the adaptor. UPDATE: The adaptor has started to fall out several times a day, making it extremely annoying, to the point where I'm considering getting the airclick as a replacement.
Car Clip:
I can't tell you whether this is good or bad since I haven't figured out how to use it. I can't find any way to attach it to the steering wheel as advertised on the cover without using scotch tape or crazy glue, which leads me to the next problem. UPDATE: I've checked the Scosche website and have found out that velcro strap is included in the set that is used to attach it to the steering wheel, although it was not included in mine.
No Instructions:
The biggest drawback of this item. Maybe I would have understood what the extra button is for or how to attach it to a steering wheel. UPDATE: There is a video on the scosche website that shows how everything works.
