Save Five Bucks...Get The Wal-Mart Brand Instead!!
Written: Mar 27 '01 (Updated Mar 27 '01)
Pros:works well, will green up your lawn, helps eliminate weeds
Cons:costly - save five bucks and get a store brand instead
The Bottom Line: Scotts Weed & Feed is great...but no better than the generic alternative. Save a few bucks and get the house brand instead.
Scotts is THE name in lawn care. No matter what kind of yard you have, or want, Scotts has just the product for you. They pride themselves on constantly creating the finest in lawn care products. Each year, we use a winterizer at the end of summer to keep our lawn going through the "cold" Mississippi winter. Then, in the spring, we pick up some weed and feed to help bring our St. Augustine back to life.
I usually get the Scotts S 29-3-4 formula weed and feed for my Spring lawn care. This formula works extremely well on St. Augustine grass. Within two weeks, I can see noticeable greening taking place, and within three weeks weeds are beginning to disappear. Within a month, my lawn looks great. Scotts seems to bring more greening than other products. I think they use more Nitrogen in their weed and feed than other brands.
Scotts weed and feed comes in pellet form. There are three kinds of pellets: one is the weed killer, which begins to work immediately. The second is the Nitrogen-based pellet that helps bring quick greening action to your lawn. The third pellet is the one that feeds your lawn. This third pellet is a time-release formula that will work for several weeks. I usually use a walk-behind broadcast spreader to do my yard, and find that it works very well. Many lawn and garden stores will let you use one for free if you purchase your fertilizer there.
Scotts makes great products, without question. However, last year I tried an experiment. I discovered that I could get the generic store brand weed and feed at Wal-Mart for five dollars less than Scotts. This Wal-Mart formula was in a larger bag as well. I picked up the cheaper alternative, and applied it to my yard just as I did the Scotts. Believe it or not, I saw little or no difference in performance. I don't know if Scotts actually makes the Wal-Mart brand or not. What I do know is that I will be buying the cheaper alternative from now on.
Sorry, Scotts. While you have a great product, it is just not much better than the alternative.
