Pros: No cords to pull to start. Easier, faster and quieter than a motorized mower.
Cons: You have to keep up with the mowing because this mower cannot handle tall grass.
The Bottom Line: If you want the easiest-to-start mower you can get and are tired of those loud motors, The Scott's Classic Reel mower is the way to go.

I have always enjoyed cutting the grass, in spite of having to fight with those darn cords that you have to pull in order to get the lawn mower started. It seems like, unless the mower is new or very expensive, that it takes more effort to get it started than to actually cut the grass.
Last summer I did some research on those old-fashioned, non-motorized reel mowers. I was surprised to read that they were easy to use. I have this memory of my father having one when I was a child, and he always complained that they were hard to push. Apparently, the design has been improved since then.
I was still a bit skeptical, so I was hesitant to buy online. I wanted to touch it before I bought it.
I headed down to the local Home Depot and they had a Scott's Classic on display. To my surprise, when I pushed it down the aisle of the Home Depot, it moved smoothly and easily. Still, that was a cement floor. I was still apprehensive about how easy or difficult it would be to push it through grass, so the clerk at Home Depot assured me that I could return it within 30 days if I didn't like it.
So I brought it home and tried it.
I find it actually easier to use than a loud motorized mower. I used to almost spend more time getting the lawn mower started than actually cutting the grass. Now I just pull my mower out of the storage room and get right to cutting the grass without having to check to see if there's enough gas or having to fight with that cord.
The Reel mower makes a whirring noise as the blades spin -- much quieter than any engine.
The Scott's Classic Reel Mower does a better job, I find, is just as easy to use on wet grass as on dry. So I no longer have to time cutting the grass with the weather. Of course, I'm not going to do it in the rain, but there's no problem for me with mowing right after rain.
Another plus is that the Scott's Classic Reel mower takes up less storage space than a conventional mower. Also, there's less maintenance involved. No gasoline is required either.
The only maintenance that's required is occasionally oiling the reel and sharpening the blades every few years.
The Scott's Classic Reel mower has a pretty wide reel. Some of these reel mowers have a relatively narrow cutting path, but the Scott's is one of the widest.
Now for the drawbacks. You can't let the lawn go (which is also a plus since your lawn will always look good). The blades can only cut grass if it's not too long. If the grass gets too long, the mower will just roll over it and not cut it at all.
Unfortunately, I have a lot of weeds in my lawn, which grow faster than grass. There have been a couple of times when I've gone a bit longer than I should have between mowings and after cutting still had long weeds. There are two pretty easy ways to deal with this. If the weeds are sparse, just pull them out. If there are too many weeds to make it practical to pull them manually, I just get the Weed Eater out and hit those spots in no time.
Overall, I'm glad that I made this purchase and I'd recommend it to anyone who doesn't mind cutting the grass no less than once or twice per week.
