Pros:Spreads evenly. Easy to use. Cheap.
Cons:Doesn't dispense all of the product.
The Bottom Line: This product is cheap, rustproof and effective in spreading but does not dispense all the product in the hopper.
I have turned into quite the gardener since I moved to my new house. I am a single mother who cant afford professionals for every job around the house so I have to jump in and get it done myself. Using the right tools helps you get the job done either quicker or with less stress and both help because I cant overdo it too much with my heart condition.
I have plugged my yard with St. Augustine grass and it seems to be doing okay. However, I needed to spread a dose of fertilizer to help it on its way. My yard isnt too big so I opted for a hand-held spreader, namely, the Scotts Handy Green II Hand Held Spreader instead of a walk-behind. Its easier to store too since I dont have a lot of outside storage room.
The Product:
This product comes to us from The Scotts Miracle Grow Company, originally founded in 1868, the worlds leading lawn and garden company with the motto Dedicated to a Beautiful World. They offer a money back guarantee if you are not satisfied with their product. Their products are competitively priced too. I bought this spreader for $6.99 from my local Wal-Mart Superstore.
Scotts claims:
This spreader is:
· Great for small applications of fertilizer, lawn seed or ice melt
· Ergonomically designed to reduce wrist fatigue
· Rust-proof plastic hopper and agitator
· Easy-to-use on/off trigger
Being made of a durable plastic, I dont have to worry about this product getting rusty. The hopper on this spreader is roughly eight by nine inches and about five inches deep. Big enough to hold a substantial amount of fertilizer without it being too heavy to operate. There is a large handle on the front, through which you hold the trigger and it serves as an armrest to prevent fatigue. The crank is on the side, easily accessible with the other hand. All in all, suggesting a comfortable piece of apparatus to use.
When you pull the trigger, it opens a small hole to a circular dispenser on the bottom of the spreader. Turning the crank distributes an even amount of fertilizer, which shoots out from the side and lands on the ground. This product is recommended by Scotts for use with fertilizer, lawn seed or ice melt.
My Experience:
I filled the hopper about three quarters full with fertilizer and take note, not to hold down the trigger at this point as it will come pouring out. As directed, I walked in four-foot wide lines up and down my yard, at the same time pulling the trigger and turning the crank. Not so difficult a task. To stop application just let off the trigger. I only have a couple of trees in my yard which Scotts recommends you stop on one side and start again on the other. I liked the fact that the fertilizer shot out of the side instead of the bottom. My ex used to have one like that and it made a mess every time.
However, at a certain point, the fertilizer stops feeding before the hopper is empty so you have to refill quite a lot. Other than that, it was pretty simple and my arm did not ache because of the support it had. Clean up is easy. Just spray it down with the hose.
Conclusion:
I am not a master gardener. In fact, I am not very experienced at all but buying this spreader was a pretty good investment. Aside from the fact that it doesnt dispense all the fertilizer in the hopper and needs filling a few times, it made my job a lot easier. It was cheap; it is rust proof and very durable. I found it easy to use and storage is minimal. I expect I will be using Scotts Handy Green II Hand Held Spreader for quite a few years in my yard. On the whole, it was a good buy.
