In Southern California a lush green lawn is a requirement to make your front yard look great. Unfortunately, we are in the grips of a major drought and we are forced to conserve water.
A few years ago I paid $12,000 to totally redo my front yard’s landscape. I ripped out everything from the front door to the sidewalk and installed new paver stones, a new driveway and installed a new sprinkler system and sod. I was not about to let it die after spending all that money for the landscaping.
SCOTTS LAWN PRO FALL LAWN FERTILIZER
Guaranteed Analysis
Nitrogen 24%
Soluble Potash 10%
Sulfur 14%
As summer is winding down, homeowners have to think about feeding their lawns before the winter hits. Preparing your lawn now will produce results when spring arrives. Your rewards will be a lush greener lawn!
HOW TO SPREAD THIS FERTILIZER
I have a Scotts Spreader which has a variable setting 1-6 that distributes a certain amount of fertilizer. Typically, you will use setting #4. For a rectangle shaped lawn, start spreading the smallest length (end) of the yard first. Then start spreading the widest length of the lawn next. Spread at a rate of a normal walk but do not stop walking once you start or one section of your lawn will get too much fertilizer.
It is recommended you fertilize every 4-6 weeks beginning in September. An easier way to remember this is to mow your lawn the first weekend in September then fertilize it and then on the first weekend in October fertilize your lawn again.
Remember to water your lawn after fertilizing. Generally, you will want to water for about 15 minutes so that the fertilizer is activated.
ACTUAL USE ON THE LAWN
I sought the advice from a landscaping director for a major league baseball team here in S. California. I love the way the grass at Dodger Stadium and Angel’s Stadium looks like and try to emulate their fields. They told me to mow my lawn every week and never let it grow to a point where I am removing more than 1/3rd of the grass. And do not cut it in the same direction. Mix it up the cutting pattern so that it allows the grass to grow more vigorously.
Fertilize once a month during the growing season and less frequently during the dormant season (winter). They recommended Scotts Lawn Pro Fall Lawn Fertilizer.
My lawn was developed my Marathon Sod and is called Marathon II. The jury is still out if this fertilizer promotes greener grass. Provided that I do not allow my grass to become overgrown, this fertilizer does promote lush growth at an expense. This fertilizer is expensive compared to other brands.
The major areas of my concern are the edges of the lawn where it meets with concrete. This is where it starts to look a bit ragged. This is because the concrete tends to draw up moisture from the dirt and grass so make sure you water these areas good. In these areas, this fertilizer did a pretty good job in the green up of my lawn.
SO WHAT DO YOU WITH THE CLIPPINGS?
If you own a lawnmower that has a built in mulcher, you should do nothing but let it fall back onto your lawn. The clippings will act like a fertilizer putting back about 5% of the nitrogen back into your lawn. Obviously, there will be a point where the clippings will become overbearing. So what do I do with the leftover clippings?
I use my grass clippings as mulch for my fruit trees and vegetable garden in my back yard. I spread it out and let it dry out in the sun. This usually takes 2-3 weeks. Once thoroughly dried out, incorporate into the soil to allow it to break down into nutrients your plants require. If you use weed killer on your grass, do not use the clippings as mulch because it will affect your desired plants in your garden.
