best lawn tractor so far

Written: May 17 '03
Pros:reliable, powerful, price nice, easy to maintain
Cons:back up safety button
The Bottom Line: Reliable is the key word for this model. You want a tractor that will last then buy this one

I have had my lawn tractor for about 2yrs and it replaced a Sears brand tractor that was a headache from day one.
I own 5 acreas but only cut about half with this tractor, but it does other yard work that my other tractor with more horsepower couldnt do.
I have had no mechanical problems since I bought it as I maintain it with filter and fluid changes as specified in the manual.
The brakes do stop quickly, but eventually the belt loosens up. The 17hp B/S engine is a superb engine in my opinion as its not as noisy as most and it seems to run cooler as well.
I have yet for this engine to fail to climb a hill or pull a trailer.
I am a big believer in B/S motors compared to others like Kohler. I feel this engine is top notch and feels more powerful than its rating.
It has a fairly slim design and very good turning radius as well. The tires have been very sturdy as I have yet to get a flat on my property.
Its 42" cut is the only thing that I didnt like about this tractor, but it turns better due to the shorter deck.
The safety features on this tractor are basically the same as most new tractors have and the back up button is a pain, but you get use to it.
The 5sp manual trans is very good and when going up and especially down hills it almost acts like an auto trans would.
The interstate battery has been trouble free as well and this tractor always starts even when its somewhat cold out in Texas though.
Replacing the blades and drive belt are fairly easy and the pulleys and mowing deck are very sturdy as well. The plastic like hood actually is a smart idea compared to most that have metal hoods. It wont rust and it does take more wear and tear compared to metal.
I guess since this is basically a John Deer is the main reason I picked this mower, plus the price and features. B/S and John Deer both have a good reputation so that helps as far as reliable even though its a Scott mower.
Parts are a bit higher for this tractor, but well worth it.
I looked at Sears which I would never purchase again. I also looked at Sabre, John Deer, MTD, Yard Man and many others, but none could give me the same quality, features and reliability that the S1742 has given me.
This tractor would be fine with some one that has up too 2acres tops. This tractor is also a subsitute for people who need to purchase atv's or mules for their property for towing trailered material as this tractor can do it as long as you stay in the manual guidelines.
My other tractors cost well over double and didnt do half the work or have any reliability to them.
