Nutz & Boltz
The Scott Speedy Green 3000 is a utilitarian dream. Not only is it light, easy to maintain and conveniently stored
it works beautifully! I should mention now that this Scotts Speedy Green 3000 is a stripped down unit that would serve smaller lots under ¼ acre well though I cannot see any reason why larger demands cannot be placed on it, though it would likely fail over time. With 9 hard plastic wheels, difficult parcels of land would place undue strain on the spindles and ferrules that attach those wheels. If however, you have a flat parcel with little rutting and level, the Scotts Speedy Green 3000 is the spreader for you.
The Scotts Speedy Green 3000 comes pre-assembled and ready to use after extending and tightening the cushioned U shaped handle. Knurled knobs facilitate extending, locking and folding of the bar for convenient storage requiring just enough space in your garage for the hopper. Although many spreaders have this handy feature, enough dont and makes it noteworthy.
The SpeedyGreen is light, as it is made from high impact plastic making it durable enough to handle the most demanding loads of fertilizer, salt, limes, seed and even top soil. Here again the wheels become an issue. For heavier loads, pneumatic or hard rubber wheels would be preferable. Load capability is sufficient to spread the contents of a 10,000 sq ft. bag of fertilizer, though some of the older mixes with much more content may require 2 trips to empty product for that same 10,000 sq ft. parcel.
Adjusting your spread rate is simple as turning the micrometer which facilitates The numbers are somewhat small and the number stops are listed strangely high and low in the window of the micrometer, though it presents no real problem, with the exception of the numbers becoming an issue if you require reading glasses. The micrometers barrel is knurled making it easy to manipulate. A steel cable attaches the micrometer to the hopper gate.
Road test
You literally can get underway moments after arriving on the job. Extend and tighten the handle bar, empty your product in the hopper and adjust the micrometer. Thats it! It really cannot get any simpler! Once underway you simply bear down on the release grip, conveniently placed on the handle and your product is released from the hopper. The manufacturer claims the rotary spread swath to be 5 ft but I have found it was more like 8 and you have to be vigilant of this inconsistency to prevent over-application of caustic or environmentally unfriendly materials.
The Scotts Speedy Green 3000 rolls smoothly and the steel frame cradles the hopper securely, inspiring confidence that the unit will not rack or tip over under load. Turning is easy and the lightweight construction makes it a breeze climbing small hills.
Once you have completed your task at hand, cleanup is easily accomplished with help of a nice blast of a garden hose. Cleanup is perhaps the most important maintenance requirement with any spreader. Fertilizer and limes have a way of corroding metal utilized in construction, shortening the life of your spreader. Although there are few metal parts on the Scotts Speedy Green 3000, there are a few and care is required. Aside from perhaps an occasional spritz of WD40 or oiling metallic parts for winter storage, this little Baby will prove to high on the performance/ maintenance ratio.
Roadtest
The Scotts Speedy Green 3000 is s solid performer. It appears to be durable and well thought out. The wheel issue, while a concern for those tending to large or difficult properties, should prove to be capable of handling most consumer demands. At a going price of under $40.00 it is a great deal for what it brings to the table. I heartily recommend this one!
