Pros: easy to apply, great results, long lasting
Cons: feeds weeds as well
The Bottom Line: For a thicker, greener lawn, Scott's makes some of the best granular fertilizer on the market, but if you have established weeds a liquid weed killer may be needed.

| darktopaz's Full Review: Scotts Turf Builder Lawn Fertilizer |
Note: this is not the original review of this product, but a new review. I had made a mistake and put a review for Scott's Turf Builder 2 with Weed Control in this product's area. If you want to read the original review of this product it is now listed under Scott's Turf Builder 2 with Weed Control. Thank you.
In my last review, I wrote about Scott's Turf Builder 2 with Weed Control. Around a decade ago, I figured I would try to do the " all-in-one " solution via picking up the fertilizer that also has the capability of killing weeds. Unfortunately, either my weeds are heartier than most or waited too long to the apply the fertilizer because even though it eliminated a few of the weeds it did not take care of all of them. After a few years of buying both Scott's Turf Builder 2 and Ortho Weed B Gone I finally decided that I really did not need to buy Turf Builder 2 anymore. Instead, I figured the original Turf Builder would work just fine. For once, this time it seems I figured right.
Every year, after my grass is somewhat green already, I go to the local hardware store, grab but a few bags of the original Turf Builder as well as a few bottles of Ortho Weed B Gone and I'm ready to rock. As with the Scott's Turf Builder 2, the original Scott's Turf Builder has a very straightforward, concise instructions on how to spread the granular fertilizer around with either broadcast spreader or a drop spreader. I've had both broadcast spreader and drop spreader and each has its advantages and disadvantages. With a drop spreader, you get a very even flow, and since the fertilizer is dropped directly below the spreading unit, it leaves a path which you can easily follow. Unfortunately, if you have a big yard, like mine, this spreader takes longer to distribute the fertilizer. With a broadcast spreader, it " slings " the little granular bits with a horizontal rotating device, which is very nice for big yard, but controlling where the grains land can become a hassle. Alas, either type of spreader will work with Scott's because they give you directions for both types.
After applying the fertilizer, Scott's advises that you water the regular Turf Builder, fertilizer into the lawn thoroughly, unlike the Weed Control variety in which Scott's wants you to water the lawn before applying the product, since Weed Control has to stick to the broad leaves of weeds. Since I'm a stickler for instructions, I follow them to the letter, and in around a month's time my lawn looks very green and very lush. Unfortunately, when you only use the original Turf Builder, it not only nourishes your lawn, but it nourishes any dormant weeds that you may have lurking deep within your soil, and sure enough within that months time, I am bound to see crabgrass and dandelions sprouting up. That is where the Ortho Weed B Gone enters into the picture. But that is yet another review. *grin* I can tell you this here, by the time I am done with both products, I am very pleased with the results.
Here's how all breaks down; if you're not plagued with any weeds at all, then this fertilizer, the original Scott's Turf Builder, is going to do you justice. It does not have any of the unnecessary chemicals, so it should also cost cheaper than any of the other Turf Builder variants. If you do have problems with weeds, but don't fear that there is a chance your weeds are hearty, then maybe you might want to try Scott's Turf Builder 2 with Weed Control. Just because it didn't work as well for me doesn't mean it might not work for you. And finally, if you are like me, and have the " weeds from hell " then perhaps you should try the Scots/Ortho combo that I use. I know, I know choices choices choices. . . Good look on the choice you must make.
