Maintaining a healthy bermuda yard in west Tennessee is not really that difficult--the hot, humid weather that we have here in the summer promotes the growth of bermuda, which is a thick, wiry grass that grows by sending out "runners". About the only thing you have to really watch out for are extended dry periods--if bermuda is not healthy and is exposed to little or no rain for weeks, it can literally "burn up" and die before its time. Over the years, I developed a regimen for caring for my yard and insuring that I have a thick, lush yard throughout the spring and summer months. Each fall, I apply Scott's Winterizer Fall Lawn Fertilizer ( http://www.epinions.com/content_252665761412) to my yard to insure that my winter-dormant bermuda yard has a good supply of fertilizer to help it come back to life in the spring, but during the spring and summer I also give my yard a little help with two applications of Scott's Turf Builder Lawn Fertilizer. If the weather is good and there's plenty of rain, I probably don't need to use this product, but I've found that it's the equivalent of a "vaccination", and gives me the assurance that my lawn will have plenty of food to survive even during the worst of conditions.
I buy Scott's Turf Builder Lawn Fertilizer in a 15 pound bag that contains enough fertilizer to cover a 5,000 square foot yard, which is coincidentally almost the exact size of my little piece of heaven. There are many chemicals in this product which promote a healthy yard, but the most important component of Scott's Turf Builder Lawn Fertilizer is nitrogen, which literally makes my bermuda jump overnight if applied correctly. I always mow my yard to about 2 inches when I apply this fertilizer, and I wait for a day when there is little or no wind. I spread the fertilizer evenly on my yard, and always try to time it when there's a good shower in the forecast, so it can be watered in thoroughly. If no rain is in sight, I simply get my sprinklers out and water in the fertilizer. Scott's Turf Builder Lawn Fertilizer has a time-release formula, which is pretty important, because the application of nitrogen can "burn" a bermuda yard just as effectively as a drought if it's applied incorrectly or in too large a quantity.
I like to apply Scott's Turf Builder Lawn Fertilizer to my yard in May and August of each year. As I said earlier, if the weather cooperates and furnishes plenty of rain, my bermuda is going to flourish anyway, but I've found that using Scott's Turf Builder Lawn Fertilizer provides pretty good insurance and virtually guarantees that my yard will be healthy with a lush, thick bermuda carpet that I'm really quite proud of.
Be forewarned--if you use Scott's Turf Builder Lawn Fertilizer like I do, you'll have to mow your bermuda yard more often. I usually cut my grass every four days or so, and I use a mulching mower to return all that organic materal to my yard, which I think further promotes the health of my grass. An added benefit of aggressive bermuda growth is that bermuda is a grass that will literally tend to overwhelm and choke out any weeds or other garbage that may show up in your yard during the spring and summer months, and this fertilizer provides the necessary stimulation to allow the bermuda to overpower unwanted intruders.
I recommend this product--I think I've hit upon a pretty good yard maintenance plan with Scott's Turf Builder Lawn Fertilizer and Scott's Winterizer Fall Lawn Fertilizer and it seems to work really well for me.
Thanks for reading.
