Pros: Easy to apply with either a drop or broadcast spreader. Gives nice green lawn.
Cons: As little high priced.
By this time each year, the last thing I want to think about is applying more fertilizer to my lawn. As nice as it looks, I'm starting to get a little tired of the mowing (or should I say my son is getting tired of the mowing and I'm getting tired of his complaining). I know that after applying any fertilizer and adding a little rain, we'll be back to mowing every 5 or 6 days. As much as we want to avoid the mowing, I must admit that a fall application of fertilizer is very important to you lawn and how it will look next spring. I choose Scotts Winterizer Fall Lawn Fertilizer to get this task done.
I'm not going to try and tell you that Scotts is cheap. Actually it's one of the most expensive fertilizers on the market. Remember, your lawn is an investment and to keep it green and lush you have to replenish the nutrients that make it so. It's sort of like the human body that needs nourishment, you got to feed it to keep it healthy.
One mistake many people make is to try and skimp when buying fertilizer. If a bag says it covers 5,000 sq. feet that what it covers. Many people will try and do a 8,000 sq. foot lawn with a bag designed for 5,000 sq. feet and they will spread it too thin so it can't do the job in the manner it was intended to. Buy enough Scotts Winterizer Fall Lawn Fertilizer to cover your entire lawn at the proper coverage rate(as given right on the bag).
I use a broadcast spreader to apply my fertilizer. There is very little dust, with Scotts, so that isn't an issue. My spreader has one of the recommended settings for coverage (It's a Scotts spreader) so I know I'm getting the correct application. It only took 30 minutes to do my entire 7500 sq. foot lawn.
Scotts has always been a quality product that you could count on. The Scotts Winterizer Fall Lawn Fertilizer is no exception. It has a high nitrogen content to help keep your lawn green longer in the fall. It is a synthetic product so those of you who only use natural products on their lawn will probably stay away. The granules are quite small and this helps with the even application. It is specially formulated so that is doesn't burn your lawn and that's very important in the fall because you are trying to get your lawn healthy and lush prior to winter so it will be that way in the spring. If you burn the lawn in the fall your lawn will struggle in the spring. You will notice that your lawn will be greener earlier in the spring if you apply this in the fall. This mixture encourages root and rhizome development.
Some varieties of fertilizers also include a weed control. If you are applying one of these, make sure to do it early in the morning while the grass is still damp from the dew so the weed killer will stick otherwise it won't work. You don't want to water for a couple of days after application.
This will be my second year using Scotts Winterizer Fall Lawn Fertilizer and my experiences the first year have been very positive. My grass stayed green longer and got green earlier. Unfortunately, like I said in the beginning of this Epinion, I/we have to mow earlier in the spring and later in the fall. The alternative to applying Scotts Winterizer Fall Fertilizer is; Don't buy Scotts and don't do as much mowing. Your lawn won't need mowing because it won't be growing very well.
