I love this game! My husband doesn't too much, but that's because I normally beat him. 8-) What is this game?
Scrabble is basically a spelling game. Everyone draws seven tiles (each tile has a letter one it) and they try to make a word with it. Starting in the middle on the board, each person places their word, each word having to stem off another.
There are around 100 tiles in the game. Some letters (like E) are on 5 or 6 tiles. Some (like Q) are only on one. Each time a person uses their tiles on the board, they draw that exact number from the pile. Play continues until someone runs out of tiles or out of space! The person with the highest overall score wins!
The board is covered with little squares, each big enough for one tile. But on some squares, there are bonus spaces, like Double Word Score or Double Letter Score. See, each tile has a number value on it. The harder the letter to make a word with, the higher the value. When a person puts down their word, they add up the total and that is added to their overall score. When you land on a bonus square, you do what the square says. If it's a double word score, you take your amount and times it by two! That's how people rack up the points!
The words that you make, according to the rules, are to be words from the English language. There is a book out that's the Official Scrabble Dictionary and if people question your word, they can challenge you. Of course, if your word is in there, they lose their turn! If your word isn't in there, you lose your turn.
There's a lot of strategy to this game and yet it can be very laid back. I've heard of all sorts of Scrabble tournaments for people. My husband and I play this game lots and when we have family get togethers, we play it a lot too.
It's for 2-4 players, but if you have more, you can split up into teams and have all sorts of fun that way. I recommend it for younger kids learning their letters and making words. But it's really good for all ages.
