This classic game is a hit at my house. I love the fact that my family can have quality time while playing and usually someone learns a new word.
This game that is made by Milton Bradley comes with a game board, wooden tiles with letters on them, wooden racks for holding the wooden tiles, a red bag for holding the letter tiles.
I like the fact that the whole family can play this game together. If you can spell you will enjoy this game. I have played with children as young as nine up and others who are senior citizens. I would recommend having a dictionary available when playing for words that may be disputed.
Before you start playing everyone takes turns pulling one tile out of the red bag. The player who has chosen the letter closest to the letter "A" gets to start the game. The player to the left of this player goes next and so on.
The first player places his tiles on the squares on the board to make the first word. This player's points are tallied, announced to the group, and then recorded on the score pad. The next player makes his word with his tiles building on the word that the first player spelled.
There are points written on each wooden tile. Vowels are worth one point. The rest of the rest of the letters are worth different numbers of points depending on the difficulty of using them. There are some squares on the board that increase our points that you get for our words. A few squares that you would want to build your words on are; double letter, triple word, double word, and triple letter.
The game continues until someone is out of tiles. All players that are left with letter tiles then deduct the points they are left with from their score.
Believe it or not almost one third of American families have at least one copy of this game. You will be glad to hear there is also a Deluxe Travel Edition, 50th Anniversary Edition, and a Jr. Edition. You can also purchase software to play on your computer.
There are many reasons for you to have this game at your house. One reason it is because every time you play Scrabble you are playing a different game because there are an infinite number of words you can use. Scrabble is good for your children working on their vocabulary, spelling and even counting skills. We learn about using strategy and taking turns.
I know families that today are trying to incorporate family activities into their week. This is great because it is attractive to both children and adults. It is not a mindless game like so many that our children play these days.
The cost of this game is only ten dollars. You can find it at any toy store or even at discount stores like Kmart and Walmart. Scrabble is a wonderful birthday or holiday gift.
