Some of my earliest family memories center around my parents playing Scrabble as I watched on. When I was old enough, I too began playing.
Now at the tender age of 31, the Scrabble board continues to be a fixture in our living room. It’s a game my children will be introduced to at a very early age.
Throughout my childhood and into my adult years, playing scrabble has been one of those activities that consistently brought us together. It’s a game that anyone at any age can play.
Benefits of playing this game especially with young children include:
1. Building vocabulary at any age.
In scrabble, you've got seven letters with which to form a word on the playing field. It's an excellent exercise in creative thinking.
You can make words vertically, horizontally.
You can use verbs, adjectives, nouns, pronouns,
As a parent, to help younger children learn, you can give "hints" that will lead the child to an appropriate term.
2. Mathematics (Someone has to keep score).
The scorekeeper is appropriately an important responsibility. One that can be delegated each time a game is played. It's an excellent primer and practice for a young mind learning to master simple addition.
3. Competition:
Its up to the parents how competitive the game can get and to what extremes you’ll go.
We’ve always had a friendly and helpful atmosphere focusing more on the basic rules of the game and encouraging high scores for everyone.
4. Creativity:
Whether or not it’ll be a word they can use, Scrabble encourages creative thinking to come up with the word in the first place.
For a child, it helps organize one’s thinking into constructive channels. For us adults, it clears out an awful lot of cobwebs that may have accumulated.
Being a Registered Nurse, I come up with a lot of medical terms, my mother who’s an attorney comes up with legal terms, my brother’s into sales and each other person that plays brings a unique perspective and vocabulary. It’s nearly impossible to play a game without new terms being introduced/learned.
5. Introduction to “playing by the rules.”
Whether you decide to play “by the book,” with strict interpretations, or with a laid back style of game playing. This game sets the stage for later rules and codes of behavior.
It’s a simple, non-threatening and effective way to introduce a child into what they “can” or “can’t” do and why. It’s a safe harbor that they’ll be able to relate to as they enter other arenas.
In all, spending $15 or so on a scrabble board and making time to play is one of the best ways to spend quality time with your family on a regular basis.
Cannot recommend this game highly enough, it is a staple. Scrabble is a game for all ages.
