I remember playing scrabble with my parents when I was in grade school. We always had a good laugh and I ended up learning new words. To this day I have a wonderful grasp of words and their meanings. Some have described my language as colorful (in a good way).
Scrabble is a crossword puzzle game. Instead of answering clues and making them fit, you build off of other words already played for points. The beginning of the game is usually easy but as letters become scarce the tension builds.
I learned that voile is a type of fabric and racily is in the dictionary. Cool huh? I loved this game as a kid and can't wait for my kids to get good at spelling so I can play with them.
We used to have scrabble play offs at our house growing up. We had games going for weeks at a time. My parents were always good sports and let us win sometimes. This helped build confidence instead of defeating us. Actually, this is one of those fond memories I like to share.
I would encourage kids to play as well as adults. We never stop learning so why not have some fun. There can be up to four players and who ever has the highest score wins. Each letter is assigned points. A's and E's don't have much value but Z's and Q's do. Your words should be made up of letters with alot of points. Whoever uses all their letters is done and the rest of the players have to add up their points and subtract them from their own score. So, you could use up all your letters and still not have the highest score.
Trust me, play the game. It is good for family fun night, get togethers with friends or family reunions. The only hitch is you need a really good dictionary and you have to know how to spell. Have fun!
